Delirium (495), Santa Cruz, California, USA Aug 11, 2008 Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a moderately sized, foamy tan head. Aroma is grapefruit and wood, an odd combination of very hoppy and very oaked. Flavor is quite hoppy, mainly grapefruit with a little pine, with some sweet caramel malt in the background, and a bit of vanilla in the finish. A hop-head’s beer, but well done, and the oaking rounds out the otherwise somewhat weak malt structure a bit. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Aug 10, 2008 Amber clear body with an off-white foamy head. Pineapple malt and brown sugar aroma. Flavor is sweet fruity with a bitter woody balance. Some bitter hoppyness. Rich and smooth palate. Creamy with a bitter oaken duration. Well balanced and tasty. rocbyter (902), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Aug 9, 2008 Hoppy aroma with a moderate amount of wood. Red orange color with a medium tan head. Super smooth malt flavor white a distinct vanilla finish. Lightly creamy. Well balanced. gameface23 (131), Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA Aug 8, 2008 Updated: Aug 16, 200812 oz bottle. Pours an attractive dark amber with little to no head. Strong smell of pineapple, caramel, malt and hops. I tasted notes of pineapple with an aftertaste of espresso beans. NoiZe (1288), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands Aug 8, 2008 Tasted somewhere along my trip through the States.
Amber colored brew. Very nice hoppy flavor. Very nice smooth oaked bitterness! BillWyce (90), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2008 bottle, poured into English pint glass.
Aroma is of hops (as to be expected
from Stone), but mixed with a slighy
smokiness. Poured with a nice, creamy
head that lasted and left some lacing.
Color is dark amber, approaching nutty
brown, with some yeast residue floating
along. Taste is of hops with a bit of
smokiness (esp. in aftertaste) from the
oak aging. The hops is very well
balanced by the oak-aging, and is not
anywhere near as over-the-top as the
"regular" Bastard. Perfect...no, but
damned impressive, as is the usual for
this brewery. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Aug 8, 2008 Porus a reddish brown in color with only a small head that is quickly gone. Smell is strong dark malts and the usual Stone hopping. Taste is much the same, but remarkably the oak is really smoothing this beer out. Wasn’t expecting that, but it’s well done and taste’s good. ZazuH (42), Brentwood, California, USA Aug 8, 2008 Updated: Aug 11, 200812 oz bottle. Pours reddish amber with a small, rapidly diminishing off-white head. Caramel and pineapple aroma. The initial malty sweetness is almost cloying, but it’s rapidly replaced by a heavy, oak bitterness like the bastard’s stomping across your taste buds in wooden shoes. Medium body - slightly syrupy. Astringent/tannic finish. Great beer overall.
