Derek881 (489), Frederick, Maryland, USA May 29, 2008 Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. The beer was a cloudy red-amber color with some sediment and a short-lived, foamy white head. The aroma has some features of earthy and citrus hops, with some caramel malt. The taste is heavily bitter, and the oaked effect can be detected slightly. It has a very dry mouthfeel, with light carbonation, and a thinner body. It’s a pretty good ale, but not spectacular. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 25, 2008 Pours a deep amber with a dense one-finger off-white head that dissipated fairly quickly leaving a slight swirl of foam on the top and minimal lacing. Smell is a balance sweet caramel malts and raisins along with a strong citrus hop smell featuring grapefruits. There is a faint oak smell but certainly nothing overpowering. Taste is a balance between the citrus hops and caramel malts. There is plenty of vanilla sweetness but the taste is much more hoppy than the smell and the finish is slightly bitter and crisp. Mouthfeel is light to medium for the style with moderate carbonation. This is a very good beer and I get the subtle differences between the original, but it’s not my favorite representation of the style. mrw1zard (54), Birmingham, Alabama, USA May 22, 2008 Updated: Jun 18, 2008Nice amber colored brew, not much head at all, very smooth taste despite the alcohol content. "Oaked" can be misleading to taste - not really much of an oak taste to it - perhaps I should try the regular ABA as well though for comparison. Great brew. kurtkosher (144), USA May 21, 2008 pours an amber color with a thin head that disappears fairly quickly. flavor is a bit lighter that regular arrogant bastard with a pleasant oak taste gearbike (413), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA May 21, 2008 Medium amber with a nice dark orange head. Very hoppy in a grapefriut way. Not the alcohol puch I expected. The oak age is very light. Enjoyable. psycho11 (22), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA May 19, 2008 Dark red when held up to the light. Not much head, even on a hard pour. Nice and bitter on the back of the tongue. Tastes like grapefruit. Wonderful! oteyj (716), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA May 19, 2008 Nice dark mahogany pour with one finger beige head and thick, impenetrable lacing. Aroma was quite evident even before I put it to my nose. Tons of hop character in the aroma- grass, citrus, pine, and gratuitous amounts of malt. Flavor is more mellow and reserved than regular ABA, perhaps because of the aging process. Excellent balance of malt with the insane hop content and a hint of oak. Leaves a nice dry hoppy reminder of its presence, even long after it has been quaffed savoringly. Palate is rich, and surprisingly quite smooth. Perhaps almost chewy, or creamy. Definitely has a way of constantly reminding you of its bold character and assertive flavors- this is among the manliest of brews. I’m actually quite suprised this isn’t rated higher than it’s non-oaked brother- perhaps the oak doesn’t do it for some, but definitely does it for me. ditmier (1021), Boise, Idaho, USA May 18, 2008 2008 Bottle - Pours a beautiful amber with a small white head, flavour is caramel malt, hop flower. I get very little oak, I seem to remember more oak in previous bottles, subtle vanilla, slight slight oak, delicious strong ale regardless, good alcolhol, I got a few cellared for down the road....
