SamGamgee (1396), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA May 10, 2008 Updated: May 30, 200812oz bottle. Hazy brown with a ruddy tint; creamy beige head. Woody and caramel aroma with citric hops trying to break through the mix. The flavor is big and brown-sugar sweet with a big oaky flavor and strong citric bitterness. Too much oaky flavor for me. The roughness of the hops got mellowed from the regular version, but the wood gives it a weird mash of flavors that I can only enjoy in small doses. (3.4) Rerate: Less oak, and more balance. Seems much more smooth this time, with a nice malt body and balancing bitterness. The aging still dulls the hops, but the mix is good. I’ll give this a slight nod over the regular version for now. mattmc1973 (301), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA May 10, 2008 12 oz bottle, poured deep amber color with small off-white head. Aroma is malty and hops, with some caramel and pine/oak. Taste is hoppy, slight grapefruit, caramel, and wood. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy and very smooth, with slight carbonation. Tasty brew, not sure if the oak makes it any better than the standard Arrogant Bastard... ReademNwheat (174), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 10, 2008 From a bottle. Pours dark copper with off white head. Oak aging added a little oak flavor to the brew but not anything remarkable. This is still a great brew but I dont think oak aging was needed to make this brew any better than it is regularly. elcaballo (101), Beverly Hills, California, USA May 10, 2008 The oak aging does not help this beer in my opinion. Its a solid brew that as layers and layers of flavor but the oak drowns out some of the great balance that makes the regular arrogant bastard special darkguardian (506), Florida, USA May 10, 2008 12 oz bottle courtesy of my friend in California. Pours a dark mahogany with a small beige head. Nose is one of the most balanced I’ve smelled. A perfect mix of grapefruit hops, vanilla (from the oak I suppose) and caramel malt. Taste is caramel and cinnamon up front with some pineapple. Then the hops really kick in on the finish with big bitter grapefruit notes, a little to bitter for my tastes but this is well done and has a nice lingering bready note as the bitterness fades into the background. Woody oak notes come out in the finish to. This is a complex and really well crafted brew thats hard to categorize, a perfect example of why the ASA category exists. On that note, strong is deceiving, there is no alcohol at all to be found here. ChrisJ (100), Warrenton, Virginia, USA May 10, 2008 Bottle @ home. Pours in a hazy amber with a respectable off white head. Aroma is fruity, sweet with notes of strong citrus and resin hops, and alcohol. The flavor is hoppy (resin & oak), caramel, nutmeg, and of course oak which is moderate and less than I expected. Bitter hoppy finish. Nice but I prefer the oaked 90 minute from Dogfish Head . Aquilo (249), California, USA May 10, 2008 The color is a lovely dark ruby/amber. The head is small. But the smell is wonderful. It’s very sweet; aromas of brown sugar, maple, and warm apple pie. Flavor is very warm and rich. Reminds me a bit of baked apples, with brown sugar and spice. Nutmeg and cloves. There is a nice earthyness in it as well that might be the oak. The hops come out in the finish. Goes down very smooth, and tickles the tounge a bit. I could rave about this beer for a while. There are just so many layers to it. It’s delicious! Lsdpunk (1), Ohio, USA does not count May 9, 2008 Poured with very little head. Very dark amber/brown color. Medium ammount of "hoppy" scent, slightly below some of the IPA’s I have had. Bitter flavor and bitter finish. Overall this is one of the best beers I have ever had!
