gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Apr 23, 2008 Pours a dark copper brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity with sort of a woody pine and oak scent, quite pleasant. Medium-full, somewhat viscous palate. Some malty sweetness and strong, but not overpowering, hop flavor. The oak is there, but subtle. Pretty nice, and well balanced. desurfer (1067), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA Apr 23, 2008 Pours a hazy dark amber with a white head and moderate effervescence. Plenty of big malts and bold hoppiness present. This is as assertive as regular AB with the addition of a slight, not overpowering oakiness. As I’m not the biggest fan of woody beers, I liked this much more than I expected to. obguthr (986), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Apr 23, 2008 Woody fig and molasses, slightly vinous. Opaque brown with a medium yellow head. Woody bark, fig, and orange flavor. Charcoal finish. Outstanding balance, not overpowering, refreshing, and enjoyable. MaliMisho (208), East Meadow, New York, USA Apr 22, 2008 This was by far the best of the arrogant bastard ales. The oak took away most of the bitterness that the original arrogant bastard ale had which made it have a caramel taste that I loved. surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Apr 21, 2008 12 oz 2006 bottle. Pours an opaque, cloudy peachy amber with a frothy, fine yellowish-tan head that mostly dissipates and leave nice lace. Aroma is dominated by aged, oxidized notes of wet cardboard along with some nice dark fruits (prune, some citrus) and a touch of freshness well underneath - an interesting combo. Flavor is very bitter tempered by an earthy, woodsy character and some fresher, piney hops. Medium bodied and smooth, but a bit watery. Not my favorite but definitely a tasty and unique strong ale. legion242 (1572), Richardson, Texas, USA Apr 21, 2008 AB has it’s fans and it’s detractors- I am neither. But I find as I get older, I am looking for more subtlety in my beers, and when approaching a beer such as this, one knows that that will not be the case. I was hard-pressed to sense any "oak". ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA Apr 21, 2008 Bottle. Pours a chestnut amber with brown head and good lacing. Aroma is citrus hops and a little dry woodiness. Mostly bitter and dry with citrus and a woody malt finish. Nice and hoppy, but nothing special. I think I like the regular bastard better, but this is a good beer. Imperial-John (154), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Apr 20, 2008 On tap at Sunset Grill in westend Boston. Dark brown with tan head, much darker than the regular one, I thought I had the wrong beer. Tasty, woody, malty, hoppy. Surprisingly different than the regular, not as bitter grapefruit.
