3.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Red-tinged caramel pour with a significant and bubbly tan head with some serious persistence. Despite the thick head, the aroma of roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, and oak comes through nicely. First sip hits you with an initial sweetness before the rugged oak comes through, finishing bitter and slightly astringent. Iíve not had regular Arrogant Bastard before, but the oak ends up being such an overwhelming flavor component, and the bitter finish juxtaposes with that in a way Iím not finding enjoyable. Iím not feeling the love for this one. Itís not bad, itís just not all that enjoyable.

Pours a finger-width, tan head that persists over a hazy, red-amber liquor. The bouquet of medium intensity combines a floral hoppiness and sweet maltiness over a distinct oaky background.
The liquor is bitter-sweet and admittedly complex. Itís obviously a brew that revels in an aggressive citrus hoppiness but--as a quality beer should, in my opinion--balances that with a touch of sweet maltiness and, here, the flavor of oak.
I would like to cellar this for a year or so (bury it in the back yard more likely, as I canít keep my hands off of good beer) and see what happens, as I think the oak in my admittedly very fresh brew was a tad harsh and the malt a bit meek when I drank this. Cellaring might mellow things a bit and actually add to both the subtlety and complexity. That being said, and as my rating attests, these are minor quibbles. Worth a try if you arenít hop averse.

This one is for the hop head only, itís got the wood, and that grapefruit thing going for it. My eloquence is for the average man, donít purchase if youíre not serious about big hops.

Bottled 330ml (Utobeer, £4.20)
Deep ruby-red color, decent creamy beige head. Strong hoppy nose with wood and rubber. Medium to full bodied. Front is a bit thin, then leads to fruity hops burst. Resin, citrus. Aftertaste is fruity-hoppy with extreme bitterness. As the basic Arrogant, this is quite simple hoploversí bomb. I couldnít trace oak in the flavor at all.

On tap at stubs. Slightly hazy dark copper pour, with a lasting tan head and fantastic lacing. Aroma is odd. Sweet malt, fair hop presence, but some odd dirty feet smell as it warms...tap lines or the beer itself? A slight touch of vanilla, likely due to the wood. Taste is burnt sugar malt, moving to vanilla oak, a heavy hop bitterness, and back to drying oak tannins. Tastes more like an IPA to my pallate, but that may be to the drying that the oak imparts. Very oak forward in my opinion. Pretty nice, though that odd aroma gets me

Bottle. Pours dark mahogany with a medium light tan head. Aroma and flavor are very hoppy with lots of grassy, piney, grapefruity notes, overlaid with, not surprisingly, vanilla and oak. The flavor is dominated by the hops and the bitter woodiness -- almost a bit vegetal. The caramel malt is overwhelmed by the hops and oak. A bit creamy in the taste and on the tongue. I actually like it, but I prefer the regular Arrogant Bastard.

Very little cloudy ruby red beer, yellowish to beige creamy small head. Aroma: pineapple, passion fruits, sweet ripe fruits, a bit of basement. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity, hoppy, red berries, citrus fruits. Aftertaste: very bitter and dry ending. Actually way too bitter.

Draft @ Coalhouse Pizza, Stamford, CT. This beer has all the flavor of Arrogant Bastard (tobacco, leather, grass) but with a distinct oak presence that blends well with the other friends.

Didnít find this one to be all that different from the regular AB. A good beer, but Iíll stick with the non-oaked version.
