BeerBelcher (750), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Sep 22, 2008 I ordered this because it seemed the most "extreme" of the beers offered at Oaken Barrel. The menu promised 100+ IBUs, and while it was bitter, it certainly didn’t strike me as THAT bitter. It was a successful marketing strategy though, as I did order it.
Color was pretty orange with lots of fluffy white head. Aroma was very hoppy with a minimal amount of fruitiness or sweetness. Aroma was decidedly hoppy, but a dry un-sweet kind of hoppiness. Flavor was more dry bitterness, not unlike Avery Maharaja. Pretty good.
I would recommend this beer. I had this on-tap at the brewpub. grimreeser (739), Minnesota, USA Aug 15, 2008 On tap. An orange amber with a nice looking off-white head, great lacing. Aroma is citrus and pine, nice smell. A little too bitter for me. johntreeter (115), Greenwood, Indiana, USA Jul 17, 2008 Thursday night gowler. Pours an orange copper with a 2 finger off white half lasting head, which left some good lacing. Light aroma of tempting spicy and grassy hops. Flavor starts malt sweet then balances with hops that was in the aroma and the 100 IBUs kick in for that bitter dry long finish. Nice big body, lively carb, wet texture, and dry feel to this IPA. EithCubes (1824), Indiana, USA Jul 16, 2008 Pint on tap at the pub. Happy amber-copper pour, hazy with a touch of ruby, with a lacing, short white head. Huge citrus nose, grapefruit, orange and lychee with a dash of pine. Fullish body, very very bitter with a good caramel malt bg, lots and lots of earthy pine needles. Viscous with some nice contribution from the yeast, great orange rind. Refreshing! A real surprise, and those 100ish IBUs never did taste better. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Oct 1, 2007 From a growler from mamabeer and husband. Light brown body with ample beige head. Citrus hops, caramel malt in the nose. Gentle carbonation, medium bodied. Taste was crisp and clean and refreshing with citrus hops bitterness tempered only slightly by the caramel malt. A very satisfying drink.
