Originally a one off special for the Peterborough Beer Festival, Bishops Farewell has become a permanent fixture in the Oakham family.
A strong premium beer of structured quality dominated by elaborate fruity hop notes, with a grainy background and dry finish.

Cask at Swan & Rushes, Leicester. Pours clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma is light citrussy, light nutty malts. Taste is light and bitter, good body for the low abv, refreshing and easy going.

Cask at Staggs Bar. Clear golden body with a dense white head. Thick lacing that completely coats the glass. Aroma of soap, grapefruit and orange. Flavour of citrus fruit and straw - wonderfully balanced and incredibly drinkable. Medium body with an oily texture. Flat carbonation. A lovely beer, much better on cask than in bottle (so much so that Iím going to gave to revisit the bottled version, which I only rated as 2.7).

Cask at Swan and Rushes. Lovely pale amber colour little head. Aroma of fresh hops, grapefruit and lime. Taste of citrus fruits, nice bitter to finish. Smooth with a decent splash of carbonation.

Misty golden yellow body and stable off white head. Surprisingly richly hopped, citric and floral. Sweet malty base, very nice actually. Hop taste as well, but a soft malt base so itís very drinkable. Medium bitterness, interesting enough. Long butter aftertaste. Really nice actually, just what I wanted right now. (Half pint at The Star Bishopís Stortford)

Cask at Thomsonís. Pours very pale yellow, with good white head & lacing. Soft carbonation. Aromas are citrus and pineapple, not getting much malt. Taste is bitter with a very slight and pleasant sourness. Creamy, medium body, good bitter finish. Another nice pint. In my limited experience with this brewery, better on cask than bottle.

My Bottom Line:
Delicate straw supports this snappy Golden Aleís citrusy hops, an elegant and highly quenching profile leading to levelled grassy hop resins .

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the clear golden.
-There arenít any signs of hard water compared to the bottle I had had a few weeks prior.
-The mouthfeel is beautifully soft and almost creamy.
-Flavors come together much more impressively than in the bottled version.

On cask at The Star Inn, Bath.

Cask by handpump at Henglerís Circus, Glasgow - clear yellow, thin white head, sweet floral aroma, poor lacing, creamy malt with meadow hop, traditional, clean medium hop finish

This is not my favorite golden ale to date but Oakham has been consistently excellent. If I had the room in my luggage Iíd pick up bottles of every one of their beers to take home at the end of the trip. If you are over in the UK and want to find out what the fuss is about try this as a starter.

Aroma / Appearance - The coppery golden base sparkles like a champagne. The body is flat as youíd expect from a typical cask ale. Pears, citrus, and lemon zest play against the base of smooth bitter hops.

Flavor / Palate - The texture of creamy ginger ale rinses the palate clean. Pears, grapefruit, and wheat sweep into a brilliant finish. Bright and crisp it has a sweet tang that doesnít intrude too much. If only more breweries could do a golden ale this well Iíd be sold on the style.

Cask@Barton arms, Aston. Golden beer with a medium frothy head. Aroma of exotic fruits. The taste is again exotic fruits, citrus, hoppy and a touch sweet. Nice body on this. Very Good.
