The first of our single hop variety beers. We were the first brewery in the UK to use Citra. The beer proved so popular that we will be brewing it again. Permanent from January 2011.
A light refreshing beer with pungent grapefruit, lychee and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry, bitter finish.

Bottle. Aromas of lychee, grapefruit, mango. Taste is medium bitter offset with a bit of sweetness. This is a good solid classic which is easy to drink and satisfying enough without being over complex.

On cask, poured into a nonic glass. The aroma is a warm and pleasant blend of orange, caramel, bread, and late notes of tropical fruits. The beer appears oily with a gold hue and a sudsy white head that leaves a snowy lacing and has a moderate retention. The taste is a medium high bitter and complimentary medium sweet. The texture is oily and smooth with a foamy carbonation and a medium body. The flavor is that of bitter citrus and a light caramel note with a smooth finish containing bitter pine and a bite of herbal and citrus zest. The aftertaste is lightly dry with herbal and bitter citrus notes as well as a mildly lingering caramel and bread undertone.

Cask version. Golden with a thin white head. Heady citrus aroma of grapefruit, orange and pineapple with a little pine. Body is crisp and refreshing. Lots of lychee, mango, grapefruit and a slight grassiness. Dry citrus finish that lingers on the palate. A superb session beer. The best example of this type of beer on cask in the UK.

This one was less hoppy then Scarlet Macaw that I just had. Still the malt bill is well juicy like the precedent. The beer is not that complex but satisfying. Aroma is poor and reminds bread, sugar and zest. The flavour is quite the same with a good mouthfeel ; soft and creamy.

Cask at The Hop Inn, Newcastle-Under-Lyme. A clear golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, slight lemon, subtle pine and some grassy, herbal hops. Taste is fruity of grapefruit, orange, mango, some lychee, subtle caramel and grassy hops. Light bodied and an oily texture. A good, citrus hop bitterness in the finish. A lot fruitier than other citra hopped golden ales. Fresher hop character too. Really good.
