COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask and bottle.
Originally brewed as a cask beer for the Peterborough Beer Festival in 2006; later bottled for sale.
"It’s a dark ale, it’s quite strong by British standards, and the taste is quite aggressive – it’s like espresso compared with instant coffee. It only appeals to confirmed fans of dark beer and is not a huge seller. When we first brewed it, people had ’Marmite moments’ with it. They either hated it or raved about it."John Bryan, Oakham head brewer.
Hawse Buckler takes its name from the plate which fills the hole for a ship’s anchor chain – the hawse-hole – during rough weather.
2008 World Beer Awards: Best strong dark bottled ale and the best dark bottled ale. Second to Tripel Karmeliet for world’s best ale.

Bottled, 500ml from Beers of Europe, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Black with off white head. What a lovely surprise this is, it opens with a pine like hoppy note in the aroma, sharpish. The body is slightly thick on the palate, plenty of roasted coffee husk, a touch of oiliness, bitterness. The bitter-sweet hops then kick in giving a vaguely grassy, leafy character. A real belter of a beer, cracking.

Black ale, no head and complex. Has an initial potent fruity hoppy aroma but an underlying malty sweetness behind that. Roasted malts are evident in its flavour but its aftertaste certainly smacks of coffee. Very enjoyable.

Aroma: Coffee, roasted malt and light smokiness. Very hoppy.

Appearance: Jet black body with a medium tan head that slowly fades. Excellent lacing.

Taste: Strong flavours of grapefruit, chocolate, cherry and dark malts. Very tangy and hoppy.

Palate: Medium body with an oily texture. Lively carbonation.

Overall: Tasty and complex. The hoppiest stout I’ve tasted - it’s almost a Black IPA.

Bottles from b&m Chester-le-Street and Tesco, Cambridge. An inky black beer that pours with a thinly disappearing tan head. It has a citrus fruity American hop flavour followed by liquorice, chocolate and a roasted creamy chocolate finish. Excellent! Is this a black IPA?
