COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A spiced stout style Ale. Mocha coffee aroma combined with a subtle herb/fruit background. Rich roast malt flavours of coffee and chocolate combine with orange fruit and hops that melt into a spicy bitter finish.

Draught (Kings Arms, Cambridge)
Frankfurters and herbal taste - sage. Quirky, and I can’t get past the sausage. A touch of apple in the aroma, but apart from that I get very little. Dry roasty finish, leaves you thirstier than when you started. Has some harsh acidic finish that’s like, but not quite, ash. Too weird for Anna, but I can just about cope. But have to say sausage one more time in the review.

Cask at The Pub, Leicester. Black with an unusually light aroma for a stout - slight toffee and roasted cocoa, slight coffee, but not much. Coffee malt taste, subtle smoke, very restrained. Decent long bitter finish though that builds.

Cask@The Criterion, Leicester. Black beer with a frothy strong head. The aroma is lightly roasted, and the flavour is roasted with mild bitterness and yeastyness. Overall a pleasant mildly roasted and bitter beer.

Cask at Ribs of Beef. Very dark brown with a nice small head. Liquorice, blackberry, festive nuts with a mild malt flavour. Medium body, with a pleasant velvety soft carbonation. Bit lighter than what I look for in a winter stout, but nice.

Cask at the Merchants Inn, Rugby - 12/12/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is liqourice, spice, raisens, dark toffee. Taste comprises treacle toffee, figs, dark malt, liqourice, spice. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, smooth on the palate. Decent stuff!

Cask, The Pub, Leicester. Very brown with a cream foam. Aromas are hazelnuts with chocolate and citrus rind with toast and hints of liquorice. Vanilla with cocoa and hints of berry. Flavours are nutty and spicy with warming alcohol (despite the strength) and chocolate. Yeasty with cocoa husks and mixed spices. Good.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2013 Cask conditioned handpump Malt Shovel Northampton 30/11/12. A black beer with an off-white head and lace. A stout with more hops than expected but also cloves. Wintery spicy. A licorice element. Having had some awful spicy stouts it doesn’t surprise me that Oakham pull off a good one. Enjoyable. Score 3.7
