Strong, dark and intensely malty, this bitter has everything you need for a cold winters evening yet surprisingly easy to drink for a hot summers day.

Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 2007. Cask, gravity dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin white head. Rich spicy notes present in the long aroma laden with dark berry fruit. Creamy texture to the smooth mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malt gives a rich complex chewy tiffin base with smokey roast malt flavours present. This fades to give juicy summer berry medlay with sweet winegums. Spicy flavours from the hop resins give a sharp bitter bite to the aftertaste. Finish is rich and malty with a warming vinous port flavour laced with orange fruit. An impressive old ale in style and highly recommended.

(Bottle. Thanks to SaintMatty) Dark reddish brown colour with brief, bubbly head. Malty, roasted nose with caramel, dried fruit, raisins, dark rye bread and faint hints of left-over cold coffee. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, dried fruit, dark bread, figs, chocolate, hints of coffee and slightly dusty hops in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Quite tasty and well balanced. Would be interesting to try this cask conditioned.

Cask @ Bon Accord. Aroma is sour fruity, little toasted malts, caramel. Flavour is caramel and toasted malts, fruits, hint of coffee. Fairly bitter finish. I can see why this beer is liked, but it just doesnt do it for me.

Cask handpull, SIBA Champions’ Fest 09. Tawny murk with a white collar. Chick pea garden herby aroma all noble and sesame nuttiness. Wash of marzipan. Struggling to read my own handwriting. It’s tired but the hops are good and drying into a bitter finish with caramel afters. Balanced and decent.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of bread. The flavor is sweet malty with light notes of caramel, leading to a dry bitter finish.
