Strong, dark and intensely malty, this bitter has everything you need for a cold winters evening yet surprisingly easy to drink for a hot summers day.

[Odense-tasting at Scheffel. Bottle from Christian.] Finally a good beer in the english round of our Odense-tasting. Great ESB-notes of brown look, fruits, rye-hops, roast, coffechocs, lots of ingredients, pleasent and nice.

Bottle. Deep nut brown appearance, clearish and topped by a gentle yellowy cover fed by strong carbonation. More than fair lacing. Rather profound malt character offers toastiness as much as roastiness. Light strawberry, Christmas pudding notes introduce the mellow leafy and earthy hops. Procures a lot, maybe too much hop bitterness. Globally well-integrated, but perhaps a bit grim, winter-like beer that does not have much in the sense of freshness. Medium body, soft, filling foaminess.

Bottled. Clear ruby beer with a creamy, off-white head. Fruity aroma with peach notes, and also hints of chocolate and coffee. Sweet and quite fruity flavour with a nice balance of black malt bitterness of that charcoal-y kind that I love.

Bottle @ ChristianScheffel tasting. [thank you, Christian]
Pours a deep brown - quite clear when looked at towards a light. Aroma is powerful, rye bread, roasted, dark chocolate and loads of toffee. Nice, full creamy palate. Flavour is really great as well. Roasted, lots of chocolate and a nice bitterness. Really a surprise!

Bottle. Brown with an off-white head. Aromas are weetabix malt with toffee and some chocolate. Light pine with yeast. Flavours are sweet chocolate with weetabix. Some roast character with good prickly pine bitterness. Dark chocolate bitterness. Another great Oakleaf bottled beer.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Out Of The Vaults Leicester. A dark brown coloured beer with an off white head. The aroma is dry and malty. The taste is malty and fruity. A bit plain to be honest but perfectly drinkable.

ante (3374) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - NOV 28, 2006
Bottled. Clear ruby brown with a rich growing beige foam. Aromatic hop aroma of grass, soil and orange-peels. crisp flavour of chocolate, earth, pine, and spices. Long earthey, spicy and slightly orangey aftertaste that lingers on for a long time.. For a Swedish beergeek like me, this one reminds me a lot of a spicier Jämtlands Pilgrim and that is a good thing.

Cask conditioned at Catford Beer Festival. Dark brown. Good body, full of rich malt character, a little rustic, nutty. Slight sourness in the finish with some hops. Almost a smoked bacon/pork character.
