Cask: Special - Wetherspoon Festival Autumn 2009
This new, rich, warming old ale has been brewed especially for this JDW beer festival, with its predominant flavour being of sweet, burnt toffee with nutty overtones, leading to a balanced bitterness and a fruity, spicy finish. Hops used: Goldings, Northern Brewer

Spoons Fest. Clear brown beer. Light semi dry palate. Rich nutty malt with an odd banana and bubblegum sweet undertone. Some fruity hop emerges in the mid making this a fully flavoured but somewhat disjointed beer. Lingering hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2009. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear ruby red in colour with a creamy thick white head. Strong malty aroma laced with ripe figs. Full creamy texture in the rich mouthfeel and superb lacing throughout. Dark malts gives a moist maltloaf base with sweet flavours of muscovado sugar, molasses and syrupy dates. Nice spicy hop flavour in the brief bitter aftertaste. Finish is malty with a creamy vanilla laced oak cask note and dry currants. Cracking example of a traditional Old Ale and very moreish. Highly recommended.

A Mes rate. Cask at Baker Street ’Sporks.
Rich amber coloured with a reasonable beige head. Good toffee notes, almost cinder toffee with plenty of tasty fruity bits too. Pleasnant bitterness in the finish. Another well made beer from Oakleaf.

Cask in the alfread herring. Alround rating: Toffee and honey malt, fairly floral with a blackcurrent note, bittersweet at times. Its alright but not great.

Cask at Bankers Draft (JDW), Bedford, in ’Spoons BF ’09. Amber with a small white head. Faint sweet malt aroma with a hint of sweatiness. Very sweet taste, almost cloying. Slight bitterness to finish. Maybe a hint of apple peel. Pretty good.

JDW Rochester. Burnt toast. Bitterness and sweetness combined in a heady rush. Lip-smackingly lovely.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol 5/11/09. Deep copper, with a slight, off-white head. Sweet, malty aroma with damsons bready malts. Caramel and re dfurit flavours, with some woody earthiness and a bitter finish. Ok, but Oakleaf can brew much better.
