Sampled at FoBAB 2010 (Chicago, IL). Pours a murky dark amber hue, some fire behind it. Frothy tan head, sticks around small layer. Aromas are rich bourbon, wet sticky toffee, vanilla, dried fruit, nuts. Initial rich toffee, nice bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit, light oxidation, mellow biscuits, dried raisins, orangle marmalade. Finish is mellow sweet, rich fruits and nuts, wet sweet toffee, finish is mellow sweet. A sweeter Barleywine overall, lighter and spirit and more invested in caramel, toffee, dried fruit, and touches of marmalade. Could it use more barrel time? Maybe.. Nice beer

Bottle shared at Dak’s Cantillon Tasting. This one missed, both in theme of the tasting and beer style. 24 karat with a bit of rusty penny at its core. Head diminishes quite quickly. Flavor and aroma of caramel, alcohol, toffee, vanilla, and a bit of wood. Not a ton of complexity here...somewhat flat. Thought about trading heavily for this but decided against it...happy with that call.

Hazy amber with no head. Nose is buttery, toffee. Smooth flavor, toffee, medium body and low carb. This seems to have lost its sweetness and thinned out, maybe past its prime.

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. The pour is a nice dark caramel color with hints of ruby poking through. There is a nice tan colored head that falls off quickly. The aroma is really woody. Almost to the point I want to question if there’s a stave in the bottle. Behind that there is a little caramel and a touch of vanilla to it. Light fruit is also present. The flavor again has a ton of wood. It’s surprising for this to be so wood forward with minimal bourbon. There is a little more of a dark fruit and licorice presence on the back end, but it’s light. The mouth feel is really thin, and the carbonation was too much. This practically jumps off your tongue. It had potential, but this bottle was all over the place

Oakshire hellshire. 22oz bottle suplied and shared by Todd at beer mongers... Pours a mostly transparent lighter toffee hue and topped with a thin wispy light beige head... Toasted malt, a touch of coconut, and a semi-sharp bourbon note. Assertive and somewhatabrasive... Flavors are pretty sharp and boozy with deeper charred bourbon bent which hits upfront and finishes on a larger bitter emphasis that totally detracts away from its experience. Thinner bodied overall. Touch too hot, well maybe more than a touch. This one certainly needs time to settle down a bit. 8/3/7/3/13

(bottle shared at Dak’s 5000 tasting). Pours a cloudy copper with thin off-white head.. Aroma has lots of wood, booze, caramel and some band-aid. Taste is sweet with some whiskey. Its still quite hot. Medium bodied with a sticky texture. OK, but I didn’t love it and there were so many great beers that day.

A: The pour is a cloudy amber color with pretty minimal head formation. S: Smells really good. Lots of bourbon, vanilla, oak right away, giving a huge barrel presence. The barleywine aromas of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and dark fruits are evident and impressive as well. T: The flavor just really falls short. Toffee, nut shells, and wood dominate the flavor. There is a bit of vanilla and some mild bourbon, but the oak and booze are just overpowering. It really lacks refinement, cohesion, and balance. M: The body is medium with low to medium carbonation. O: A really nice nose but the flavor was disappointing.

The infamous #1. Update on this, since I believe it was released in 2011. A: Mahogany with a thin creme colored ring on top. Lacing. N: Big bourbon nose on top, with heaps of caramel. Toffee and prunes, Oak. T: Big sweetness and a helping of bitterness. Lots of wood. M: Sticky, medium-heavy body that’s slightly watery. Alcohol is big . O: Still astringent even after all these years. The nose is very inviting, but the sensation of drinking it still takes a person by surprise. Guess I’ll keep sitting on these.
