Bottle from Johnís Marketplace. Pours very ruddy copper with a multifinger foamy beige head. Warm aroma of roasted malt and xmasy spices. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is roasted malt, but not harshly roasted. The spices arenít quite there. But there is something bitter balancing the malt - like subtle rosemary? Or maybe just fruity/floral hop. Itís a bit dirty/gritty in the finish. Still not harsh though. Really good ale, but not really great ale. Or maybe it is.

Sweet bonus courtesy of bvc. Pours hazy amber with thin tan head. The aroma has various spicy notes mixing with black licorice, spicy maple and black strap molasses. The taste is spicy Christmas cookie, nutmeg as well as dried and crusty black strap molasses, black licorice and spicy maple. It has a non trivial amount of age on it but still seems pretty bright and vibrant in flavor.

Bottle, shared with TylerDurden (who no longer frequents this site, the bastard). Pours a dark brown with some sedimentary particles at the end of the pour. Chunky tan head. Sweet brown sugar and raisins, sponge toffee. Astringently bitter finish, like biting into grape seeds. Medium bodied, very tasty.

Bottle:   Dark dirty caramel, huge fluffy light beige head, very nice lacing.   Looks top notch.   Faint roasted malt nose, slight biscuit, a little bit of peat.   For an English Strong Ale this one isnt as mealy or disgustingly rich as others, which is a nice change of pace.   This one has a pretty good hop bite to it.   Balances well up front with the normal heavy biscuitiness of English Strong Ales.   This one actually doesnít have that huge heavy malt driven backbone. &bnsp Instead, it has a bit of a hop forward punch.   Could use a little more malt at the backside to balance the hop bitterness when it warms.   While up front its decent, you soon see that as the hop lingers you want to have some more malt backing.   Easier than most to drink, but could use a little bit more balance towards the end.   Otherwise, fairly tasty.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, toasted nuts), lightly hoppy (apricot, grapefruit), with a light note of diacetyl. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Pleasant if somewhat simple malty nose. Decent enough balance, maybe a little sharply bitter at the very end. Forgettable but reasonably solid.

22. Pours an opaque, near-black ebony. Dense creamy sand-colored head falls fairly quickly away to a loose scattering of bubbles. Good sheeting lace. Nice dark roasty piney nose, a little molasses there. Creamy medium body, soft carb. Very full mouthfeel. Roast, pine, biscuit, molasses, and some earthy hop bite at the finish. Very solid little winter warmer.
