COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask, occasional;
Named after the Oakwell Brewery Founder – Guy Senior, the ale is a classic premium pale ale, a great colour once it has been poured, the translucent golden chestnut ale sits well in any beer glass. Oakwell Senior doesn’t build a large frothy head but the head is pure white. It has a delicious smell of hops and bitters to entice any real ale drinker. The barley that has been used to create the ale is steeped for a few days before using and this adds the malty and almost biscuity taste that sits under the hoppy flavour. Real ale is not usually served too cold, Oakwell Senior is definitely better and slicker when it is at roomish temperature. At 4.3% ABV, you certainly know when you have had a pint of Oakwell Senior, so don’t be lulled into a false sense of security!

Hand-pulled pint in the Oakwell Breweries only pub in Shropshire: The Seven Stars at Cold hatton on 27th Oct 2012 during a local CAMRA surveying trip. Light copper body with a thin white covering of foam. No great aroma from this: I got hints of fruity, floral hops and mild esters of malts, but I had to dig deep for them. The actual taste was leaning towards the malts a little more than the bittering hops, fairly bland and uninteresting compared to the Barnsley Bitter and the Mild on offer. The body seemed thin and lacked depth of flavour: refreshing enough but I expected more after having a pint of the breweries 3.8% ABV Barnsley Bitter first. It may well be named after the breweries founder Guy Senior, but I bet he wouldn’t be too pleased to know his name is on this beer!

Hand pulled at the Longstop, Leicester. Light ginger colour, with slim head and smooth lacing. Very standard Bitter, but good balance - no off notes. Nut, tangy malt. Pleasant, but certainly not essential.

Cask, Magpie, Carlisle. Fresh tasting, with a burnished orange-gold appearance. Light and hoppy, with a great soft bitter aftertaste and just a hint of grainy malt. Creamy, rounded, lovely full-flavoured mouthfeel, with a touch of crisp apple.

Cask conditioned at The Old Punch Bowl, Warwick. Gold amber with white head. Fresh hoppy bitter, quite dry and crisp with a deeper malty body than expected. Nicely done and very pleasant.
