FatPhil (1965), Espoo, Finland May 22, 2008 500ml glass bottle, as oksamitove - thanks SaintMatty!
Very dark clear red, brief fizzy head. Rabbit food aroma - dry and branny. Slightly fizzy palate. Very dry roasted grainy taste, some husks, and plenty of bitter noble hops. Some alcohol wafts too, but not really an alcoholic taste. Hops are a bit grassy and metallic. Previously we’ve had loads of the barhatnoe (velvet) in 1L plastic bottles, and it was very different from this - less hoppy, more malty, sweeter, and smoother. To be honest I prefer the older version. Are people really sure that barhatnoe is the same as oksamitove?
Sledge Jr (2693), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Jul 18, 2008 In the 0.5L bottle from HyVee CB. Pours a clear dark brown with a thick off white head that sublimates rapidly. Has a chocolatey roasted aroma that is not overwhelming, but definitely present in the chilled beer. Flavor is surprisingly good with its malted milk chocolate shake taste. This has somewhat a smooth silky palate for such an inexpensive beer. A real value, I’d have it again. Eructoblaster (1232), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 9, 2008 Bottle - 500ml. Brown body with fading beige frothy head. Malty aroma with brown sugar and plummy hints. Taste is misbalanced (too sweet, with strange molasses notes). It ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Not very good. robforbes (641), Bremerton, Washington, USA Jul 3, 2008 purchased at red apple in bremerton, washington.
pours a hazy brown with a medium tan head, some lacing.
smell of cocoa, brown sugur, malt.
taste is a bit watery, brown sugar, nuts, spice, malt. JoeMcPhee (3643), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 4, 2008 500 ml bottle. Deep brown with a dark ruby tint and a fast fading tan head. Aroma is lightly bready, with some prominent brown sugar, rye bread, rich toffeeish maltiness and a kiss of fruity plums. Flavour is decent with a fairly prominent charred toastiness that isn’t readily apparent on the nose. Plums and date honey in a fairly clean yeastiness. There is a bit of metallic flavour that I don’t really dig, but otherwise it’s quite nice.
