A second example of Kvass that I’ve tried, noticeably different from the other brand (Buket Chuvashii) and I think I very slightly prefer this one. Can from Bell’s Market in NE Philly. Pours very dark brown, coffee-like: almost opaque. About a centimeter of thick, foamy head dissipates quickly, leaving thin but persistent carbonation. Strong aroma of pumpernickle and molasses, hints at worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or dark rice vinegar. Sweet and sour; neither the sweetness nor sourness is unpleasant. Very balanced. Rich, heavy, extremely filling, like drinking liquid bread.

500ml can in a cafe in Bayswater in the sunshine. As ’Kbac Очаковсk (or at least this is as close as my browser allows), ’HOMEP 1*’, 1.2%, canned two months ago. Cola brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is raisin and cola. Body is light, tingly carbonation, a touch foamy. Taste is raisin, rye bread, thin cola, demerara. It’s an OK alternative to a straight soft drink. Pretty much tastes like a thin bready version of cola.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2015 Dark ruby color with just a bit of head. Burnt sugar aroma and some dark fruits. Taste follows the nose along with some fruity tartness. Overall seems like a tart cherry drink with some burnt sugar. Not bad at all, expected something different.

Deep brown to black, thick off-white head. Good retention & thick lacing. Aroma of zest, malts, acids, some fruity notes. Light to medium body. Soft carb. The flavour is a well-balanced combination of moderate sweetness & delicate sourness. Same finish. Very solid.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2015 200cl plastic bottle at home. I had the 1.2% alcohol version. A typical Russian soda beer quencher. Solid grains taste, very sugary.

CAN 50 CL at 1,2% ABV. Both the aroma and the flavour are dominated by strongly burnt sugar, with notes of smoked dried fruit. Though the sweetness is very high, it does not feel cloying, being somewhat balanced by the light toasty notes, as well as the lactic and fruity acid finish. Carbonation is moderate.

Can from a Moscow grocery store. ABV is 1.2%, but can looks exactly the same as the one here. Pours dark brown with a tan head than fizzes away instantly. Aroma of treacle, raisins, brown sugar. Taste is of raisins and sugar. This is probably the most common kvas in Russia, and like most of this country's beer (read pale lagers), it only makes sense to drink it on a hot summer's day.
