A second example of Kvass that I’ve tried, noticeably different from the other brand (Buket Chuvashii) and I think I very slightly prefer this one. Can from Bell’s Market in NE Philly. Pours very dark brown, coffee-like: almost opaque. About a centimeter of thick, foamy head dissipates quickly, leaving thin but persistent carbonation. Strong aroma of pumpernickle and molasses, hints at worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or dark rice vinegar. Sweet and sour; neither the sweetness nor sourness is unpleasant. Very balanced. Rich, heavy, extremely filling, like drinking liquid bread.

@ Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig. The pour’s brown with a tiny bubbly head. The nose is straight-up sweet grain, little else. Brown sugar. A touch artificial. The taste is slightly tangy roasted nut, caramel, apple. As thin as it is sweet. Light body, zero carbonation.

Can at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2013, 10/08/13. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Nose is brown rye bread, earthy, brown sugar. Taste comprises sweet sweet raw bread pudding. Light bodied, fine carbonation, sweet sweet finish. £0.69 worth of Kvasness - what more do you want ??? A plastic bottled version perhaps !?! Post edit - this fucker just dropped my average beer rated from 3.4 to 3.39 !

Can 50cl, a clear copper beer with low head. Aroma is sweet with caramel notes, body is like water with dry grapes notes with a sour touch. Bit strange even is not bad on the taste part.

Tap. Redish-brown color. Tiny to almost no head. To drink it just after their 2% kvas is mistake. This is basically caramel and sugar concentrate mixed with water.

Can at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2013. It pours deep brown with a medium yellow-white head. The nose is caramel, earth, brwon bread, and sugar. The taste is damn sweet....caramel, sugar, brown bread and tangy raisin with a sugary finish. Light body and moderate carbonation. Damn sweet and sugary, but definitely not the worst Kvass out there...
