3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
aroma of rye, bread, cinnamon, hay, grass, citrus. pours dark mahogany with glints of redness, with foamy off white head. tastes of sweet grains, corn, cereal, whole wheat bread, flower pedals, citrus hops. starts with tart and bitter hops but finishes grainy and bready. palate is full and well bodied, carbonated but not too much. bitter but not on the aftertaste. overall a lighter black ipa, having flavors resembling a wheat beer mixed with a porter. tasty but an outlier in terms of style. i was most impressed by the complexity of the aroma.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hailing from Norfolk Virginia, is the one and only Great Dismal IPA . I’ve been frequenting this establishment since the day they opened. I even remember their test batch of this dark, complex, coffee roasted ale. It’s delicious and goes up against any contender. Cheers! In honor of Chris O’Connor

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle. Deep but clear purple brown with a clingy tan head. Nose is red grapes and dull grass with a hint of coffee. Substantial medium body with a tangy buzz. Taste is mocha and caramel with a touch of orange. For me a pleasantly toned down Black.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear brown, small head. Flavor is sweet and not very hoppy. Roasted malt isn’t showing up well. Tastes like an amber.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured as a 2 oz sampler at Virginia Beer Live 2013. Smells of sweet tea and dark grain. Feels like it needs a bit more hop bitterness to match style than is present.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle: pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing froth of light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasted dark malty nose with some fresh tart grapefruity notes. Starts with decent fullness and light biscuity sweetness with some mild roast and bittersweet citrusy hop bite before a drier, semi-tart finish. Could be a little less tart, but isn’t too far off style.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a strange brackish brown with a nice off white head. Aromas are nicely malty, roasty, pine/resin hoppy and some caramel and cocoa notes. The palate is decidedly non Black IPA-ish. This tastes super roasty, though it is an even and balanced roast that is aided by some lovely creaminess; there is also some east coast style hop notes (resin mainly) and some raisin or light molasses hints as well. Palate is under carbonated and just a tad heavy. Overall, not a BIPA to gauge this style by, it’s a decent beer but more a hoppy porter than what a BIPA has come to represent, still pretty drinkable.
