3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle: pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing froth of light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasted dark malty nose with some fresh tart grapefruity notes. Starts with decent fullness and light biscuity sweetness with some mild roast and bittersweet citrusy hop bite before a drier, semi-tart finish. Could be a little less tart, but isn’t too far off style.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Newport News, Va - 2nd Street American Bistro - 12 oz. bottle. Deep dark as coal pour with a thick sticky mocha colored head. Aroma has some eggy accents, a brief touch of spruce. Flavor is full bodied and delicious. Nice bittersweet citrusy accents, a touch of licorice, some minty rye accents, some nuttiness. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Very decent - will look for more from this brewer while in the area.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a lighter cola glow at the bottom, all with a soapy-ish two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, bunches of grassy and herbal hops, some soap/cleanser and a bit of lactose and cream in the mix as well. Medium-bodied; Very assertive and nice roasty malt flavour at first that gives way to a touch of coffee, but followed well by some smooth hop bitterness and a more obtuse bitterness at the end with hints of chocolate. Aftertaste is well-rounded with a good balance of malts and hops, some smooth sweetness and a bit of a bitter flavour more from the roasted malt than the hops, but still showing well for the style. Overall, a surprisingly nice Black IPA that shows pretty much what the style should taste like, but without a ton of complexities - still a good beer to sample if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from The Wine Rack (Exxon Gas Station) in Olney, Virginia on 06-March-2015 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for US$1,50 sampled at home in Washington on 12-June-2015.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark and cloudy with a large, puffy, khaki colored head and good lacing. Some resinous hops pop up in the aroma before the roasted malts move in. Earthy, toasty flavors of the strong malt backbone are well balanced by citrusy/herbal hops. Bitterness and alcohol are noticeable in the aftertaste. Medium-to-full bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel leading to an average length finish.

The Great Dismal Black IPA, named after the wildlife refuge. The Great Dismal Swamp, in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, once used as a part of the Intracoastal Waterway, is a dark, full bodied ale, extensively hopped both in bittering and aroma.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very surprised by the low numbers on this one. Definitely one of the better microbrews from the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area. There are a lot of stout flavors present in this IPA, and the high alcohol is integrated very well.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On draft at O’Connor. Pours a stout brown color with an off-tan head. Nose is roast, some piney chocolate, and bitter coffee. Flavor is similar with bitter coffee, some pine, dark chocolate, and roast. Light to medium in body and a nice Black IPA overall.
