A wild aroma roasted malts and citrus... Kind of a funky aftertaste, wondering if I got a bad batch

Pours a dark brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma is tropical fruit and citrus. Flavor is a combination tropical fruit, roast, and hops. A bit watery, but it still tastes great.

Bottle:   Cola hued, large foamy beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Strong toasted malt nose, a bit astringent, dark chocolate, black coffee, some fruitiness.   Powdery sweetness up front, fruity, with a roasted malt, black malt, and soft coffee background.   Not all that hoppy, but if this is a Black Pale Ale then so be it.   Not much hop to be a Black IPA.   Too astringent, not smooth enough.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Needs more IPA, more sweetness, touch more body.   A little muddled otherwise.   Thanks Kevin!

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, hazy dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, roast, coffee, nice pine, grass, juicy dark fruits, grapefruit, orange peel, some pineapple. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, roast, coffee, nice pine, grass, hints of dark fruits, slight yeast into some orange, finishing bitter, dry. The cocoa powder flavor really works well here.

Interesting mix of citra hops with the dark malts of a black IPA. Combination of bitterness and acidity tingle your tongue and taste buds. Citrus dominates the aroma, malts kick in on first taste and linger at the finish. A touch of sweetness mixes in to keep you guessing.

Bottle from trade with umich03jm. Thanks! Pours nearly black with a lingering beige head. Aroma of lemon, grapefruit and char. Flavor follows nose. Charred oak in the finish.

$2.19 (or $2.29) single poured into a shaker pint. Appearance: Mostly black with some ruby tints on the side of the glass. Reasonable amount of lacing. Head falls to about half an inch and lingers. Smell: A sort of peach or mango aroma is the most significant one as far as hoppy smells in this brew. Pretty sweet on the nose. Thereís a very faint roast character, but with eyes closed not knowing what this beer is, chances are you wouldnít guess itís a black pale ale. Taste/feel: First thing I noticed was the huge feel. Itís a surprisingly big bodied beer, and it tends to foam up in your mouth on each sip. Thereís then that slightly juicy peach/mango sort of flavor on the middle of the tongue. The finish is, again, that faint roastiness. The dark character of this beer that I was expecting really isnít there, which is surprising as well as disappointing. A decent beer, but Odd Side has done so much better. Thereís a nice peach/mango thing going on in this beer, which would be nice in a pale ale or IPA, but itís as if this beer was dyed black with food coloring. I guess thatís sort of impressive that they hid the roastiness that well? For me, I wanted it. Additionally, the way Black CPA foams up on my tongue was kind of interesting at first, but it just got to the point where it felt like I was eating foam off of a float. Well, thatís not true... I love it in that case, just not so much in a beer. Black CPA is a reasonably good beer from Odd Side, but your pupils wonít dilate. I donít know what the age of this beer is (date is gone for some reason), but hops tend to fade, not malt.

Aroma is sweet hops, roasted malt. Appearance is black, light tan head. Taste is balanced, equally malt and hop. Mouthfeel is perfect, soft carbonation and velvety. Overall, a solid brew.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is dark. Itís a dark brown, on the verge of black, with a thicker khaki head that fades down, leaving some gorgeous lace with it. The aroma is something I wouldnít expect to see with a black IPA. There is a great roastiness to it, but it almost carries a chocolate or coffee character youíd see in a porter or a light stout. There is a subtle citrusy hoppiness on the back end that kind of keeps the IPA thing in play. The flavor is like Iím drinking a porter. There is a great roastiness on the immediate front, backed up by a little coffee and chocolate. There isnít much at all to let me know this is an IPA. The finish is a little dry, but the lingering aftertaste is roasty and coffee-ish. The mouth feel is thin, slick, and the aftertaste is dry, and lingering coffee. It would be great as a porter, but not so much as a black IPA

Pours very dark brown to black with a very tall, thick khaki head that settles slowly and leaves nice intricate, clumpy lace. Nose involves nice clean roasted malt and toasted notes along with some tropical fruit, pine resin, and minty herbal hop notes. Somewhat sweet, quite bitter. Medium bodied, softer carb, oily, bright yet a somewhat absent mid-palate, with a lengthy toasty and hoppy bitter finish. Would like to try a verifiably fresher example, as without a bottle date I have no clue the age of this. It seems to drink as though itís been sitting around for a bit. Very promising certainly, looks and smells great, but it lacks punch.

Bottle, pours black with off white head and lace. Aroma is cardboard, chalk, and dark chocolate. Taste is nicer with chocolate roast, hops, grapefruit, and toffee.
