Alextricity (509) - Michigan, USA - APR 17, 2014
$3.49 single poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. Appearance: A very hazy yellow/orange color with a fluffy off-white head that leaves a lot of lacing. A semi-aggressive pour got the beer perfectly in the glass with about a two finger head. Looks fantastic in the glass. Smell: Hoppy with some definite barrel characteristics. I get a woody sort of aroma with vanilla, and just a trace of bourbon. From the barrel though, I mostly get that woodiness more than anything else. Taste/feel: Mouthfeel of this one is about what I’d expect -- very mellow in carbonation and pretty smooth. The taste is much different than I remember their Citra Pale Ale being -- this could easily have been called something else and I’d not think it was THAT beer. First of all, there’s quite a decent bit of bourbon barrel character here, but again, it mostly provides an oaky barrel sort of flavor. Outside of that, there are spicy and fruity hops, and a very nice malt finish that works well with that oak character. Slightly bitter on the finish with a lingering bourbon barrel flavor, but pretty mild overall. Given the low ABV, this is definitely not a "big" beer, and it doesn’t really drink like one either. This is probably the first and only time I’ll have a beer where I prefer the original to the BBA version. Then again, I’ve always felt like BBA’ing works far better for stouts than it does any other style, though I’m open to anything (hence the reason I got this beer). To further my point though, their BBA Mayan Mocha stout is a great beer that I liked quite a bit more than the regular Mayan Mocha. Still, if you just love the character BBA’ing adds to a beer, you should be pleased with this one. It’s definitely tasty and interesting, but it’s probably not something I’d personally go out of the way to seek out again. I appreciate the barreling, but it has more barrel flavor than bourbon flavors -- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but at $3.49 a single, I expected more. They could have just aged this beer on wood chips and probably gotten a nearly identical flavor.

A golden pour with light head. A hoppy and citrus aroma. Tastes the same. Almost no trace of bourbon, smell or taste. Same as their Bourbon Mayan Mocha Stout in that sense. I would have rated higher without bourbon in the title. Still a good beer.

12oz bottle. Poured a golden color with a smaller sized head. This one was odd but in its oddity, it all worked. Citrus, wood, vanilla, and fruity. Maybe a trace of bourbon, but more barrel than bourbon.

Bottle to pint. Appearance is a translucent orange with white head. A nice hoppy aroma similar to the original but with a noticeable oakey presence. Taste is citrus hops and oak, the hops have definitely been mellowed by the aging. All in all a pretty decent beer, but I will take the freshness of the original.

No. Take a nice pale ale with the best hops in the world when fresh and destroy it putting it in a barrel. Pours yellow orange thin white head. Some wood and citrus aroma. Light wood with some weird taste, like cheating on a orange peel. Dry finish. Light body light to medium carbonation. Guess the rest of this 4 pack is going out as extras to other people, maybe they will enjoy this.

Draft at HopCat. Dark golden color. Bourbon aroma. The bourbonnkind of zaps all the citrus flavor. Not much vanilla. Would have to say I like the regular kind better.

On tap at Petes Place. Not much citrus going on in this one. Tropical hints come in the end. A little weird. Not too bad though.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2014 Tap: amber body, nice clarity; foamy, white cap recedes quickly to a thin collar around the outside. Aroma is like a less bitter Citra PA with a very small bourbon-oak & vanilla inclusion. Some citrus, grapefruit, juicy orange. Taste follows the nose exactly, though with more warmth and bourbon presence. Juicy citrus fruits without the expected hoppy bitterness. Woodsy oak mid-palate, little bourbon warmth all around. Finish of very light whiskey, oak, orange, mango, and grapefruit. Not a fan of bourbon barrel hop-centric beers, but this one was actually alright.

Draft. The pour is a nice hazy yellow with a nice head. The aroma is a perfect blend of hops and bourbon. The taste is a little bourbon heavy upfront, but mellows nicely. A nice drinking ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at The Oak Cafe. Pours a clear golden orange color with a big fluffy head that fades slowly and leaves nice lacing. Really like the aroma, smells sweet. Vanilla, cherries, wood, light bourbon, coconut, mangos, and tropical fruit. Interesting taste. Big oak barrel notes up front, coconut, wood, vanilla, and bourbon. I get a little citra hop taste in the finish with some tropical fruit but the barrel aging has overtaken the base beer. At least the bourbon flavor is fairly light which is nice. Overall, I enjoyed this more than Founders Doom and I doubt I will ever love a BB IPA. This is about as high a rating as they will get. The appearance and aroma is what makes my rating so high.
