Cuzzin is a stout as black as the coal Lafayette is famous for. Itís thick, like the cuzzinís accent, but smooth like his singing voice. A rich malt backbone reinforces roasty character to provide a pleasant drining experience. O.G. 1.052. Fermentables: 2-Row Barley, Weyermann Munich, Weyermann Caramunich III, Crisp Chocolate, Hugh Baird Roasted Barley. Hops: Varies

Draft at Odd13 (10oz). Head is initially small, mostly/fully diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, roasted grain), with a note of vanilla. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation. Very simple, chocolate-heavy aroma with no nuance. Very syrupy sweet in the mouth, so much that I couldnít even finish a 10oz pour (probably made it through 5 or 6oz). Based on almost every other offering being some sorta sour[ish] thing (the first thing the bartender proudly boasted as I was perusing the list was "we have a lot of sours!"), this lone dark beer seems to be a niche-filler only, and the fact that this is a regular beer but has never been canned/bottled seems to suggest itís sort of an unwanted stepchild aimed at people who like sweet chocolate-syrupy beers.

Tap at Under the Sun. Pours dark brown with thin light brown head. Decent retention and a little lace. Aroma is sweet, toasted, toffee. Flavor is nutty, toffee, mildly smoky, fairly sweet. Tastes more like a brown ale than a stout, malt is toasted not roasted. Soft carbonation, medium body, and smooth texture.

Draft at the brewery. Pours black with a thin, bubble beige head. Tastes like dull coffee, roasted, bready. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like dull old coffee and grains.

Tap at brewery. Pours deep, dark brown with creamy tan head. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, prunes, raisins, earthy hops, and faint ash. Flavor is roast malts forward, chocolate, ash, faint dark fruit esters, and faint vanilla; dry, ashy finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark black pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of roast, cocoa, nice oats, hints of sweet molasses, dark fruits into a bit of spice, yeast, slight coffee notes. Taste was a mix of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, oats, hints of roast, coffee in there, slight spice, finishing fairly sweet, slightly bitter.

On tap. Poured a jet blak color with a dense, creamy tan head that left some spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, light espresso, bitter chocolate, and a soft graininess. Smooth, lightly sweet entry leads into a clean, roasty espresso flavor that lingers into the finish where itís paired with some soft vanilla and moderately dry chalkiness. Full mouthfeel without feeling heavy thanks to the clean maltiness and chalky dryness on the finish. Overall, impressive in itís simplicity, and very clean and unmuddled for a stout. Very nice, I dig it.

Tap - inky black pour with a frothy tan head - this is quite a rich stout, with a pronounced and intense bitterness and roast, without any char or abrasive notes - hard to pull that off - the dry, roasty, espresso notes up front are tempered by a creamy sweetness arriving late - a slight mineral character through the middle - rich, tasty, and mostly balanced, but for a slightly cloying sweetness that develops in the finish as it warms - excited to try more from this brewery.
