Nice flavor, even on the palate. The appearance has great color. The aroma is light. Compliments my gyro nicely.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Clear dark amber beer, tidy pale tan head. Light dry palate. Whisper of sulphur. Orange and red fruits underneath the toffee malt. Subtle bubblegum ester. Dry finish. Okay.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in October 2011. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale mahogany in colour with a thin white head. Cracked walnuts in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing throughout. Pale malt base gives a rich maltloaf flavour with juicy raisins evident. Slight citric notes of satsumas leading to the dusty bitter aftertaste. Finish is malty with syrupy sweet raisins. An excellent version of a Scottish premium export.

Cask conditioned Handpump Four Candles Oxford. A regular brown coloured beer with a touch of white head and lacing. A sweet and toasty beer. Nice caramel notes. Malty and bready. Clean and smooth. Decent enough.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 12/10/11. Brown with a slight off-white head. Sweet, slightly buttery aroma with some fruit drops and hint of roastiness. Slightly caramelised flavour with more roastiness and a bitter finish. Very Caledonian.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat (JDW), Reading] Deep ruby-brown with a moderate cream head and a light fizz. Fruity at first, then buttery in the mouth and a mild, dry roastiness to finish. The buttery mouthfeel makes it a little cloying at times. It’s OK, but definitely the worst of the guest beers at this Spoons fest.

3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hand pulled cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW) Watford. Chestnut with an off white head. Toffee malts, slightly nutty, far less diacetyl than Caley normally throw up, good hop bite and lively smooth carbonation. I think that this was a decent effort.

1.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Hand pulled at the Figure of Eight, Birmingham. Smells smokey and sweetly malty. Mouthfeel is thin and wretched. Flavour is ripened vegetable and fruit peelings, with some dishwater and bin bag. The finish is of lingering rotting. Ghastly. A car crash. I could not even finish a third.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask @ Society Room, JDW. Spoons Real Ale Festival autumn 2011. Was looking forward to this one, but turned out to be quite disappointing. Amber colour, off-white head. Nose is caramel, toffee, bit of fruits. Flavour is sweet toffee, toastiness, followed by some sweet fruityness. Slightly dry and sweet finish.
