Richer than most amber ales, 90 Shilling is smooth & deeply satisfying, with a crisp, clean Colorado taste. The name comes from the old Scottish method of naming a brewery's beer, based on original gravity and resulting tax rating.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a deep, clear amber with a creamy beige head that recedes to a thin cap quickly. The aroma is decent for an Scottish ale with the requisite sweet caramel malts joined by a hint of smoked peat. It’s pretty light overall in the nose with some earthy hops coming through. The taste is more of the same with hints of chocolate and lots of caramel sweetness. There is a heavily toasted malt character throughout with a light smokiness coming out in the finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with good carbonation. A cross between and amber and a Scottish ale, this beer is a solid entry in either category.

Deland, Fl - on tap - Abbey. Dark amber appearance, with frothy, off white bubbly head. Toasty, nutty aroma - very sweet. Flavor has some sweet caramel notes with some candied sugar notes in the back end. Some peaty accents with just a hint of phenols. Smoooth mouthfeel.

[355ml bottle, Appellation Wines, Edinburgh] Pours a deep, rich brown with an inch high head that quickly reduces to a thin white lacing. Aromas of malt, leather, caramel and treacle, with those last two starting off the taste. The palate finishes with the sweet malts coming though, together with the alcohol and some raisin. Rich but not cloying, with great mouthfeel [25102010]

Bottle @ the mondial de la bière. A clear amber beer with no head. A quite watery beer very yeast like, low smoked notes, some light sourness at the finish. Bit disappointing about this one.

12 oz bottle
All the way from Missouri in a trade this was a nice beer to drink as the leaves fell from the trees. With a good balance between maltiness and hops it was easy on the palate yet not bland. Overall this is one of those beers that is a great regional addition to the brewing landscape.

Aroma / Appearance - The gradient of the body was deep brown (almost caramel). Carbonated with a strong head giving it support it stirred to life as it was poured from the bottle. Caramel, peat, piles of leaves ready to be bagged, and pieces of dead tree bark give this an earthiness that makes you feel right at home.

Flavor / Palate - The first sip is like licking a wet pile of leaves after a fall rainstorm. Cidery residue comes next bringing warmth like a hot apple drink after a long day outdoors. The mouthfeel is rich without being cloying. Easy on the palate it finishes with a light maple touch like a drop of syrup on a stack of pancake crumbs. This would fall into the category of great local/regional beers to stock in the fridge for parties. If you get it in your area you owe it to yourself to pick up a six pack.

good scottish ale. very malty with little to no hops taste. no real head to speak of, but this is of no consequence. aroma follows the taste very closely.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2011 Tasted on tap at the Steakout Saloon in Fort Collins, Colorado. Excellent Scottish ale, not too aromatic but malty and a slight nutty flavor. Highly recommended! Fuck, I need to re-rate this but it is one of my all-time favorites.
