3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 GlenVargas (136) - Arizona, USA - MAR 3, 2008
So, the 90 Shilling (bottle) poured a sweet-lookin’ chestnut with a hefty, white head. The aroma was a little floral, a little syrupy, a little nutty. The taste wasn’t too hoppy, but it had sufficient bite. The malty flavors hit me more than anything else, but something vaguely reminded me of a barley wine ale. The 90 Shilling isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but it’s on par with other Odell beers.

Bottled, BB 11/7/07. Poured clear, medium coppery-amber with a fluffy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up very sweet, very toasted caramel, buttered bread, and ample smokage.. the prevalence of the sweetness put me off a bit. The flavor was about as expected, with toasty caramel and a touch of darker fruit at the core.. some light smoke, but mostly sticky sweets.. just not very good. About medium-bodied and tacky at times on the palate with higher carbonation.. just didn’t do it for me.

12 oz bottle pours a clear copper body with small khaki head that deposits attractive clingy lace. Aroma of toffee, red apples and oranges. Very tasty profile! Malty toffee mingles with the fruity hops to prduce an exquisite balance. Very nice.

Bottle. Tasted from a chilled pint glass. Nice amber color. Off-white, creamy thick head. Kinda sweet tasting amber ale, hint of bitter hoppiness to balance the sweet Caramel taste. Not bad.

For whatever reason, I bought this in a make your own six pack sometime last year. Opened it today for no reason. And all that no reason, whatever reason transfers to the beer. Pretty basic. Nothing special for a scotch ale, though not a favorite style, or anything else this might claim to be. Not my top Odell.
