3/16/2011: Odell India Barleywine Style Ale... Aroma: MALTY with lots of sugars and subtle fruits; tinge of alcohol. Appearance: Darker red-orange; minimal off-white crown. Flavor: Lots of toffee maltiness; ripe, fleshy and citrus fruit hops; fairly mild bitterness; some tobacco in the finish. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; really smooth and mellow texture. Overall: Good, but not quite a barley wine in my book.

Pour of amber color with frothy head. Taste is sweet up front with notes of brown sugar, toffee and a earthy/grassy finish that is slightly bitter.

750 ml bottle from one of the AZ guys (Dak, Dave or Jason). Pours a clear deep amber color with a small off white head. The aroma is big and fruity, caramel malts, citrus and some earthy hops. The flavor had a nice balance between the sweeter caramel and lightly toasted malt and the earthy grapefruit citrus hops. Pretty decent even though it had a year on it. The only knock on this was the mouth feel. Consumed 3/2011.

Always was one of my favorite barley wines and beers by Odell. Sorry to see it retired. Hoppy sweet aroma. Nice amber color that became cloudy at the end of the pour. Thin head. Carbonation was solid even though the bottle was two years old. Oily smooth palate. The taste has a brandy essence with caramel notes. Hops balanced this out quite well. Alcohol was clearly present but not overpowering. I will miss this.

March 28th, 2010 - The O’Dell India Barley Wine marks the first time I stopped thinking of O’Dell as another six-pack regular out in the Boulder brewing scene, but a brewery willing to invest the dollars and time into a high risk high reward brewing scheme. What’s amazing about this kind of gambit is breweries do it all the time, and while the high risk is financial, the reward is the satisfaction of curiosity. It’s an experiment that doesn’t end at the bottom line, but a scientific voyage into uncharted brewing waters. I have a tremendous amount of respect for any brewery that decides to go down that avenue, and now that I know O’Dell is doing it with serious intent, I salute them, This barleywine is a bit darker than the O’Dell Golden Ale sitting next to it with less lacing, but a more inviting smell - clean with fresh grains, fresh malt and a distinct hops edge, with a nice cinnamon touch, distinguishing this from darker, headier barleywines. The taste is boozy, but strikingly hoppy, and missing a lot of those regular flavors I associate with barleywines - dark fruits, dark spices. As a reinterpretation though, this is certainly unique, and I’m anxious to throw whatever spare change I can summon at future efforts to endeavor new tastes and flavors.

More of a DIPA but oh well. Orange caramel color. Soft citrus notes until it got more air and then the hops woke up. Big and hoppy with a big malt backdrop. A little thin for a barleywine though

2009 vintage. Been sittin on this one for quite a while. Poured a beautiful amber with a huge, frothy off-white head. Hints of toffee, raisins, brown sugar, piney/grassy hops, caramel, and dark fruit. Taste is sweet upfront with hints of caramel, toffee, plums, biscuit, candi sugar, and grass with a moderately bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium with high carbonation. Getting much sweeter as it it warms, but still very bitter on the finish. Could use a little more body, but overall a nice American barleywine.

Post Borefts I Invasion of Fonefan and Charlottes room tasting! Cloudy amber beer. Nose of fresh hops. Softish palate. Rich hops, not too aggressive. Nice caramel malt base. Finishes with piney hops. Slightly dry. Easy drinking for it’s abv.
