COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As the Colorado hop growers prove they can produce world class hops, we as a Colorado craft brewer want to showcase what our state can offer, not only with the ingredients used in crafting them. Mountain Standard Double Black IPA showcases the homegrown hops our brewers helped pick from farms along Colorado’s western slope. MST pours committingly dark with a light brown head and a slightly roasted hoppy nose. An ephemeral bitterness, the result of combining roasted malts with an assertive American hop profile, contributes to MST’s act of balance and harmony within nature or your glass. As the season’s darkness sets in why shouldn’t your beer become darker as well?

I’ve had this both on tap and from the bottle. I actually prefer the bottle version of this one.

(Rating #4396)

Beers like this help me turn the corner with this style. The earthy, bitter, danky hops work with the rasted malt.

Citrus, pine, and floral hop aroma is very prominent. Interesting take on black IPAs and making it an imperial black IPA. Well balanced and now one of my favorite beers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Almost as good as Stone's More Brown Than Black. Hoppy yet malty; malty yet hoppy. Great flavor with just a nice tinge of bitterness. Home run! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draft at Odell. Pours a medium brown with an off-white head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee, piney hops, and a bit of chocolate. Flavor is roasted malts with aggressive hops: pine pushes through the efforts of the malts to conceal it. Light citrus notes also intersperse themselves. Interesting black IPA overall.

12oz bottle from a four-pack that cost $10.49. Black color, mocha head, looks good. Smell is hoppy citrus but I was disappointed after hearing this compared to Pliny (lies). Flavor is decently hoppy but again not on the level of Stone 15th. The roast flavor really conflicted with the citrus, like oranges dunked in bitter coffee. I would have preferred chocolate covered oranges but oh we’ll. Still, this is a decent beer and a much better value than when it was in 750’s. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-09-2011 18:22:22

Draft and bottle sample. Very dark brown in colour with medium carbonation. Strong aromatic mix of pine sap, white grapefruit, roast, and coffee. Strong flavors of citrus, black pepper, and more pine sap blend well with notes of toffee, and dark chocolate. Fairly weighty on the palate, but the strong leafy bitterness balances things out nicely. It seems like just about every aspect of this beer is intense, aside from the apparent alcohol (which it hides well). I think a different hop blend would have suited my taste better, this is still a very well made black IPA.

This is a very, very nice looking beer. It’s a very dark brown color with a light/medium brown colored head. The aroma is slightly malty, almost roasted, but it has a really nice combination of earthy hops and roasted malts. Gentle and very nice. It has somewhat if a dull mouth feel and my first impression was that of an imperial brown ale crossed with an IPA. Tastes like an IPA, but with tiny hints of smooth, earthy roasted malts and finishes extremely clean. Overall, this is a a fantastic beer that combines everything in a really easy-to-drink package. One of my favorite black IPAs. Oh, and you would never guess by the flavor how much alcohol is in this!
