COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Half pint at cask pub and kitchen, london. Love the aroma of fruits and hops. Hazy golden color with small white head. Very tasty, fresh, fruits and hops. Balanced and very good imperial ipa. Also some sweetness on taste. This one is awesome.

"this had some kick to it, but I was really surprised that it was 9%. Interesting and complex aroma with spicy sweet english malts and copious amounts of citrus and tropical fruit-like american hops. Definitely enjoyed this one."

December 28th, 2012 - I might have a holiday hang over - not the alcohol kind, mind you, but the sort that finds an emotional crutch on all the decor and temporally bracketed good cheer and good will - but beer is still on the menu. Tonight’s treat is O’dell’s Pond Hopper, a collaborative project with Thornbridge, way away on the other side of the Atlantic. These are always promising, as some of the subtler tastes found in English ales can often benefit bolder, more explosive profiles of American brews. I check to see if this maxim-sans-evidence is true in this case. A tropical fruit hat of aromas emanates from the brew - a foxy orange and hazy liquid - including banana, mango, a splash of grapefruit for just the right amount of bitterness, the sugary sweetness and cinnamon of a cinnamon roll, and a yeasty dough smell. The flavor is thick and boozy, and supported by flavors of apricot and peach, and a deep orange. These fruit flavors blaze across the tongue and leave in its wake the flavor of apricot jam on the aftertaste. The yeasty note from the nose appears here too, though is often crowded out by the heavy alcohol and fruity esters. Did the stereotype hold up? Not at all. This is a big, bold, brassy brew. Whatever the English breweries added were not restraints, but more flavor. It’s a bit wild, but I like it.

Really good. Strong mix of hops aromas with a subtle caramel hint. Dark copper color with a slight unfiltered look. Medium weight that coated the mouth. Decent carbonation. Blended well and somewhat sharp from the bitterness. Caramel malt background added a good base. Would definitely try again.

750 ml cork and caged bottle from Portale Birra, served in a pint glass. Sunrise orange, slightly hazy, with a big, fluffy, forever lasting off-white head. Lots of bubble streaming up. Good lacing. On the nose tropical fruits, orange peel, bubblegum notes, resin and a fair amount of caramel malts. Sweet-ish hoppy aroma. Quite harsh during the first sip, heavy bitterness and at the same time heavy, almost astringent, sweetness. Certainly fruity, sharp and lingering citric aftertaste. Almost peppery, again resiny, pleasent malty backbone, and perhaps slightly soapy, but I’m fairly sure this isn’t a fresh bottle, so fair game for that. Absolutely no trace of the alchool. Average to lively carbonation, medium body, creamy texture. Unbalanced, but decent enough.

Keg Half Pint at White Horse American Beer Festival 2012, Parsons Green, London in July 2012 - Orangey Gold in colour. Very Fruity; orange citrus and tropical fruits; mango and peach. Hoppy; piney resinous hops. Balancing malts. Nice fruit/hop/malt balance. Fairly bitter fruity hoppy throughout. Liked this a lot. Lovely Beer!

Bottle at Duke’s Brew & Que, Hackney on 11 January 2014. Poured a hazy orange with a large, fluffy off white head. Wonderful fruity aroma with notes of tangerine, mango, peaches and some honeycomb. Malty, toffee-like flavours, balanced very nicely with gentle citrus hops. Finish was biscuity malt, peppery hop and syrupy fruit. Great double IPA, held the balance nicely and the alcohol complemented it nicely.

Caramel, herbal hop aroma. Caramel sweet, sort of a stale-ish flavor. Maybe kind of an old bottle?
