This time of year in the Rockies, one day can span all four seasons. Morning snow gives way to afternoon sun, sending fresh snowmelt into our rivers and into our mash tun. With a complex malt backbone dry hopped for notes of citrus and pine, itís almost as surprising as the season itself.

This is a Frankensteinian style of beer: trying to be different it doesnít satisfy any single style. Pours a copper penny red, aroma is west coast hoppy, head and lace dissipate quickly. Malty nose, broad malty palate of caramel malts: crystal and melanoidin. Itís not an IPA, or a red ale, not sure what style Odell was going for on this one, but the finish peters out with no structure.

look: 4 smell: 4 taste: 4 feel: 4 overall: 4 Review from notes: 12oz served in a SN IPA glass A - Reddish copper body, 2 fingers of dense head that takes itís time. Thick lacing left behind. S - Bread/biscuit malts, slightly fruity, English yeast, leafy green hops, pine, fruit bread. T - Citrus hops up front, good malty backbone, some bready caramel, slightly toasted, pine comes through along with a blast of grapefruit citrus bitterness on the finish. M - Creamy carbonation, medium full body, smooth feel. Very well rounded red here. Great execution all around. The malts blend very well with the hops and yeast providing a tasty drink from front to finish. Serving type: bottle 04-23-2013

Pours a clear copper-red, with smallish head. Aroma is floral-citrus, with some malt and grain mixed in. Flavor is very bitter-hops, with something almost like a coppery finish/aftertaste.

Pours an amber-gold, with nice-sized, lasting head. Strong floral and hop aroma--I wasnít really expecting that! Flavor is of a good, strong IPA--nice combination of hop bite and citrus flavors, with quite a bitter finish to it. This one really surprised me--more IPA than amber ale.

Jujube gelatin candy red malt and pine and cedar resin and apple/maraschino cherries and such. is that American malt giving it a goopiness and simple apple-caramel flavor...calcium and plastic and metal flakes and copper penny yeast in a Robitussin sugary sweet alcohol finish. I swear it smells like a makeup purse. I constantly see empty bottles of Runoff Red on the side of the road so I guess some people drink it.
Earlier Rating: 3/1/2009 Total Score: 3.2
The body on this seems to be loosely fit together, and the maraschino cherry sweetness along with a dominant crystal/munich malt character comes across a big plain jane. hop character is minimal, and whatís there is somewhat oily and resinous, with a peanut and cedar note in the finish. I felt numb the entire time drinking this, couldnít figure out what the point was.

Solidly caramel base with a penny-like finish. Still hop forward with hints of floral and pine on the palate. Great body and lacing that lasted an hour.

Bottle. Clear reddish copper with a big foamy caramel-white bear that lasts and laces. Aromas of pine, spice, citrus, rye, grapefruit and light caramel malt notes. Flavor is rye, malt, light caramel, citrus, and spice. Medium bodied with a dry finish.

A nice deep red color. Smells of hops and malt. Bitter front with a sweet malt finish.

The appearance has a clear copper color with a large off-white head, and the aroma blends a light malt with resin, floral, and spruce hops. The taste is mildly bitter the second it hits your tongue, but it fades to a slight bitterness alongside a sour sourness, which isnít as bad as it sounds due to the earthy nature of this brew. The palate fuses a slick texture, medium body, soft carbonation, and an earthy finish.
Earlier Rating: 1/26/2013 Total Score: 3
This aroma of this beer is overwhelmingly of hops and cedar, but the color of this beer is a brownish red color with a slight off-white head. There is a heavy bitterness derived from the hops in this beer, and it only amplifies as the bitter finish continues to linger on the tongue. Also, the light body, thin texture, and soft carbonation combine nicely, despite the unpleasant aftertaste.

Solid red. Smells grassy and citrusy, maybe a little bit of raspberry. Taste is similar, drinkable. Solid red, though it's a favorite style of mine I'd suppose.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2014 12 oz bottle from Biggie Liquor in Conifer. Reddish amber and clear appearance with a lasting, off-white head and lacing. Fresh aroma of citrus hops, juicy fruits, pine, floral notes and bitter resin. Similar flavor, bitterness nicely balanced by sweet malts, caramel/toffee and bread. Medium body with a smooth, creamy feel and a crisp, lingering finish, bitter and semi-dry. Pretty tasty.
Earlier Rating: 1/29/2013 Total Score: 3.7
12 oz bottle. Pours deep red with a frothy two-fingered off-white head that lingers and laces the glass heavily. Smells like grapefruit, oranges, grass, hops. Citrus flavor, pine sap and a touch of mint with a nice malt backbone. Medium body, with a dry, sticky texture and average carbonation. Hoppy and fresh all the way through with a sweet and dry finish. This is how an amber/red ale should taste!
