This time of year in the Rockies, one day can span all four seasons. Morning snow gives way to afternoon sun, sending fresh snowmelt into our rivers and into our mash tun. With a complex malt backbone dry hopped for notes of citrus and pine, itís almost as surprising as the season itself.

The appearance has a clear copper color with a large off-white head, and the aroma blends a light malt with resin, floral, and spruce hops. The taste is mildly bitter the second it hits your tongue, but it fades to a slight bitterness alongside a sour sourness, which isnít as bad as it sounds due to the earthy nature of this brew. The palate fuses a slick texture, medium body, soft carbonation, and an earthy finish.

This aroma of this beer is overwhelmingly of hops and cedar, but the color of this beer is a brownish red color with a slight off-white head. There is a heavy bitterness derived from the hops in this beer, and it only amplifies as the bitter finish continues to linger on the tongue. Also, the light body, thin texture, and soft carbonation combine nicely, despite the unpleasant aftertaste.

Solid red. Smells grassy and citrusy, maybe a little bit of raspberry. Taste is similar, drinkable. Solid red, though it's a favorite style of mine I'd suppose.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2014 12 oz bottle from Biggie Liquor in Conifer. Reddish amber and clear appearance with a lasting, off-white head and lacing. Fresh aroma of citrus hops, juicy fruits, pine, floral notes and bitter resin. Similar flavor, bitterness nicely balanced by sweet malts, caramel/toffee and bread. Medium body with a smooth, creamy feel and a crisp, lingering finish, bitter and semi-dry. Pretty tasty.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep red with a frothy two-fingered off-white head that lingers and laces the glass heavily. Smells like grapefruit, oranges, grass, hops. Citrus flavor, pine sap and a touch of mint with a nice malt backbone. Medium body, with a dry, sticky texture and average carbonation. Hoppy and fresh all the way through with a sweet and dry finish. This is how an amber/red ale should taste!

On tap at Odellís. Appearance: slightly ready and good sized head, great lacing, red color, clear. Aroma: Citrus, bread, little metallic on the finish, sweet pine. Palate: medium body, thin and somewhat creamy texture, average carbonation. Taste: sweet bread transitioning to light bitter hops that builds and diminishes rather quickly for an IPA. Overall, I really like the unique combination of red and IPA; looking forward to getting a six-pack of this.

Bottle @ home, picked up at RJís Fort Collins. Pours a clear burnt orange appearance with a cream colored head. Spruce / sappy piney, woody, somewhat resiny, dry caramel malty aroma that is pretty nice. Herbal, toasted caramel malty, quite dry, a bit doughy, herbal, slightly floral, resiny hoppy flavor with just a touch of citrus. Really nice how dry the beer is but Iím not completely crazy about the hops. Theyíre not necessarily overly bitter but just arenít that interesting to me. Not a bad beer and certainly one Iíll likely drink 5-10 pints of on tap being that I live in Fort Collins, but I wonít probably be buying a six pack. St. Lupulin and Odell IPA both seem to have more character than this.

Tap @ Odells. Hazy dark red orane appearance with a creamy tan head. Quite piney hoppy nose on amber malts. Flavor again really shows the extra piney, earthy hoppiness from the dry hopping. There is a very nice amber malty body behind it however. Bitter piney finish.

It would probably be more accurate to call this a red IPA. Very nice bitterness and citrus/pine flavor. Great aroma to boot.

355ml bottle from Blackfriars, Glasgow (£4.50):
Hoppy with some caramel and sweet malts. There is some sugar and a generally fruity aroma on top of some tropical fruit notes.
Copper with red tinges and a tiny lacing come head on top that is slightly patchy too.
Sweet with caramel and toffee malts and a topical fruit backing that mirrors the nose. There is a touch of alcohol along with the hops but nothing in your face.
This one has a good balance and nice sweet touches that go down well. The beer is fruity and bitter with a medium body and similar carbonation.

A really nice beer from Odell and one that I would have again. There is enough going between the sweet malts and the tropical fruits to keep you interested and the balance between the two is excellent.

Bottle @ Deanís Birthday tasting, courtesy of jmgreenuk. Clear reddish pour with a thin white head on top. Aroma is slightly floral, malty and a touch of caramel. Flavour is quite disappointing, medium sweet and not much complexity. Watery mouthfeel. Itís a shame, because this beer has a very nice aroma compared to the overall beer.

Bottle at Deanís Birthday Tasting, August 2013. Poured a clear chesnut brown with a thin white head. The aroma is rich and malty leading to a medium to weak bitter flavour with some malt and liqourice on the watery palate.
