Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

Dark crimson, garnet, chestnut pour with a dense eggshell head. Balsamic vinegar, tart cherry, brett, funk, and earthiness in this one. Dark fruit, astringent, perhaps some unripened plum. Looks good, sounds good...just not very good.

Dark brown murky pour with small off white head. Aroma of vinegar, ripe cherries and citrusy. Taste of tart apples, red wine, slight yeast, touch of oak woodiness. Turns fruity sweet in the middle and finishes off beatifully. Nice carbonation and mouthfeel. Very good beer.

Nice appearance and great lacing. Aroma is slightly medicinal. The taste is tart but a bit bitter. Cannot tell if it’s hops or astringency.

Sampled on 10/1/2012 at Odells Brewery. This wild ale pours a very murky dark brown color. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, sweet and tart. A full bodied sour/wild ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, tart and a little funky. The hops are herbal. Nice tartness, its tart but the sweetness still shines through. Hints of wood and some funk. Not over the top, but it definitely has the Flemish Brown/red aspect to it. Some brown sugar at the finish. Very nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is lingering tartness.

Dark brownish pour, tan head. Aroma of vinegar, wet oak, light yeasty notes, tart cherries, plums. Flavor is sour, red wine vinegar, old oaky notes, cherries, pluots. Interesting and quite drinkable.

A really dark pour, looks black to me, with a 1 finger head of foam with some great lacing. I get a big fruity tartness on first smell, second smell..some hints of chocolate and vanilla. Blimey, the label mentions the latter 2. Fruity/vinegar sourness and vanilla up front in the taste. Some sugary sweetness mixed in there that is nice but confuses my palate somewhat. It finishes sour and gives me a blast of the alcohol. On the upper end of medium bodied with lively carbonation, it’s a good mouthfeel here and is pretty drinkable. I think this is a very good take of, based on my limited experience with, the style. It’s surely worth a try.

On tap at the brewery. Deep brown appearance with a slight red tint and a small brown head. Big vinegar, acid, cherry pit, lightly roasty, nail polish, and raspberries in the aroma. Taste is really sour, red wine vinegar, wood, a touch of vanilla, tannin, and red grapes. Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation. Pretty good Flemish interpretation but a bit too much acetone for me.

750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head, with some sheet like lacing, over a slightly hazy reddish brown (SRM 20) body......nose is sour with lactic tones, sour cherry, plum, light cocoa......taste is sour cherry, plum, light cocoa, balsamic tones, sherry tones, finishing with a sour/sweet iteration....mouth feel light of medium, alcohol hidden, carbonation low. This meets the Oud Bruin style quite well, with layers, and layers of both aroma and flavor. Sometimes Odell misses, in this one they did incredibly well. BJCP 9/3/15/4/8

Tap @ Odell. Pours a hazy reddish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Oaky, dark grape, vanilla, tart, acetic, interesting aroma. Somewhat acidic, vinegar, chewy woody, plum, grape, tannic flavor. Pretty tasty but nothing overly special (and I definitely prefer Friek to this).

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber brown with a medium creamy tan head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet caramel and candy fruit with a sour twang. It’s a little subdued.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and fruit with a big sour (candy apple) twang. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice lacto sour. This is much more intense and more sour than the first bottle I had.
