Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head, with some sheet like lacing, over a slightly hazy reddish brown (SRM 20) body......nose is sour with lactic tones, sour cherry, plum, light cocoa......taste is sour cherry, plum, light cocoa, balsamic tones, sherry tones, finishing with a sour/sweet iteration....mouth feel light of medium, alcohol hidden, carbonation low. This meets the Oud Bruin style quite well, with layers, and layers of both aroma and flavor. Sometimes Odell misses, in this one they did incredibly well. BJCP 9/3/15/4/8

Tap @ Odell. Pours a hazy reddish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Oaky, dark grape, vanilla, tart, acetic, interesting aroma. Somewhat acidic, vinegar, chewy woody, plum, grape, tannic flavor. Pretty tasty but nothing overly special (and I definitely prefer Friek to this).

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber brown with a medium creamy tan head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet caramel and candy fruit with a sour twang. It’s a little subdued.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and fruit with a big sour (candy apple) twang. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice lacto sour. This is much more intense and more sour than the first bottle I had.

Sooo stoked my 1900th rating could be this awesome beer from this awesome brewery. Tap at Odell. Murky dark brown with an off white head that recedes really fast and clings around the edge of the glass. Aroma initially has some light sour tones but there are immediately some sweet malty tones to join it, making this medley of malty sweet chocolate, vanilla, sour oak, and fruity red wine essences. I could smell that for hours. Taste was wonderful, with notes of sweet cocoa, sour fruity red wine oak tones, and bitter vanilla, with a finish of lightly sour chocolate. Balanced, complex and purely delightful.

Poured from a bomber a deep, dark brown almost a black with little head that didn’t hang around long. The smell is an earthy sour with hints of chocolate and vanilla. It has nice flavor with not an overwhelming sour or sweet. There is just a hint of chocolate and vanilla with some woody tastes. It’s a solid Oud Bruin from Odell.
