Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

I love sours but I found this one out of balance and not so enjoyable. Lots of lactic sourness and acidity, with plenty of wood and some cherry fruit. It revealed some levels while it warmed but the sour was too lactic for me. Bottle.

Brown colour, slightly hazy, off-white head. Aroma of wyeast brett, caramel and red fruit. Sweet flavour, sour touch, fruits and prunes. Finish caramel, sour fruits, funk and malts.
Not really an Belgian Oud Bruin, but it does have some similarities. Not bad though, not bad at all.

Pours dark brown with some beigeish head. The aroma is dense sour vinegar and Belgian yeasts with some lightly toasted grain. The rich darker grains barely come through a robust vinegar tartness and layered Belgian fruitiness. Flavors of dark berries and some lemon peel with light orange citrus come through with a bit of bitterness. The yeast carried a lot of flavor that is hard to sort out. It is naturally sweet with the grain and and lively carbonation but between some light earthy herbal hops and the sour/tart yeast it leaves a drying grainy sparkling tart palate. Great complex sour that is easy to drink but I find myself sipping it as it is a rich treat. It loses nothing with temperature.

Thanks to Travlr for sharing this one. 65 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBWG 2013. Brown reddish beer with a beige head. Nose is lots of the typical USA brett / sour malt profile, cherries, sour dark fruits, toffee, sour wood. Taste is similar USA sour malt / brett profile, cherries, prunes, wood, sour dark fruits, toffee, sour fruits, sour barrel, quite enjoyable, tang, spices, touch of red wine wood,… sour malt sour body. Quite enjoyable American sour. Not really an Oud Bruin for me or at least, I do not feel like this is what is understood under a Oud Bruin traditionally over here, profile-wise not method of production. Doesn’t matter, it is a yummy beer & a nice sour.

75cl bottle sample @ RBBWG 2013, courtesy of Travlr. Brune/acajou, col beige.

Bottle. Cloudy dark brown color, large brown head with good retention. Aroma of funky dark fruit, prunes, raisins. Taste is softly sour summer fruit, dates, sour cherries. A good example of the style.

I’ve had this bottle since about September: Removed the cage from the top and left it on the counter for about 2 minutes and the cork popped itself! The brew was ready to leave the bottle. It pours dark caramel/ chocolate brown with a small amount of sticky tan foam, leaving a little lacing. Aroma is dark fruits, caramel, peach, hay, with some spice and a little booze. The flavor is sweet and sour, very woody with some spice, booze. I never would have guessed lactobacillus, and perhaps the brett has been VERY tamed with a bit of age. VERY well done brew with some depth I can’t really describe, however, some might argue it’s on the less sour side of the classification. It finishes bitter, twangy, with some mild black pepper throatyness.

Pour on tap at the CO rare beer tasting 2012, dark brownish pour with thin to no head, aroma brought notes of slight acetic vinegar notes, some dark fruit, caramel, toffee, hints of funky tones as well, slight lactic note as well, smells pretty nice for the style. Taste is a nice mix of caramel, toffee, nice dark fruits mixing into a bit of acetic that is appropriate, leading into nice lactic and slightly funky notes, finishing fairly tart, a bit thin, but well done.
