Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

750 caged. Hazy copper like appearance, with long head retention. Grassy, pine scents mixed with orange blossoms. A well balanced sweet malt and citrus like hop flavor. Tastes of earth and appetizing orange honey preserves. Full body. Nice refreshing change from all the N.W. style DIPA’s. Necter like finish with some burn and a slight bitterness. Overall a little pricey for a beer I would like to enjoy more often.

750mL at Woodshop 7. Pours a full haze golden with medium white foam. Nose is floral, spicy, white peppercorn. Taste is boozy, sugary, melon heavy. Loads of cantaloupe sucked in rum or vodka. Thick and dense. Alcohol shows through.

10 oz goblet draft at Martin City Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is an orange copper, lightly hazed, with a small white head. The aroma is citrus tropical (peach, mango, papaya) hops, caramel malt, nice aroma, just somewhat faint. The taste is sharp citrus peach orange hop, balanced with caramel, tea flavor crystal malt along with a touch of alcohol heat in the back. The flavor lingers with some soft dirtiness, then dries out with some light alcohol heat. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and the heat in finish picks up as it warms. I really like both these breweries, fun to try a collaboration.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2012 Pours to good head and great lacing. Cloudy light orange. Smell: floral bouquet, but slight dirt element. Taste: good sweet malts, some hops (not as much as I was expecting from a DIPA), lemon citrus element, and again a little regrettable dirt. Balanced beer - not a bomb - but doesn’t really stand out, and there is that one off-taste flaw. Yet to have anything really great by Odell - their St. Lupulin APA has come the closest. RE-RATE: Had this sit in the fridge for another day, and the grapefruit aroma and balanced flavors came out even more. Bumping up from 3.4 to 3.7 overall. NICE stuff. Earthiness gone!

It poured a hazy golden color with a small off-white head. The aroma was of straw, some citrus, earthiness and a little light yeast. The taste was of straw, earthiness, yeast and some light citrus with a smooth dry lingering earthy finish. Very tasty.

Citrus hops: Smell and flavor. Too bitter hoppy for me. Not my favorite but my comrad says he likes it.

Very light haze on this gold beer, tidy white head. Smooth palate, a little viscous with mild fine carbonation. Smooth creamy malt. Nice tropical fruits, zingy mango and orange with traces of lemon, pineapple and others. Mild aniseed. Finishes sweet with more lovely fruit and some bitterness kicking in. Smooth and tasty beer - good stuff!

Pours clear golden initially and hazy after that. It has a good sized off-white head that clings on pretty well. The aroma has spicy hops, pine, grapefruit, anise, herbs, grass and hints of malt. It would probably seem way out of balance on the nose if the hops were all so gentle and pleasant. The flavor starts with an earthy English yeastiness, dry caramel malt, then the hoppiness of pine, grapefruit, spice and floral burst through. It has a medium / full body, but has a crispness due to the lively, but restrained, carbonation. The finish adds some grass and sulfur and is pretty dry for an almost 9% beer. The alcohol is well hidden in this one. Very well done and far different from others in the IIPA realm.
