Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Bottled. A dark golden beer with a yellowish head. The aroma has notes of fruits, malt, caramel, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of over ripe fruits, hops, caramel, alcohol, and straw, leading to a bitter finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Very perfumy hop aroma. Rich body, biscuity and caramellish sweet but totally dominated by these perfumy hops - perfumy rather than citrusy. Warming alcohol finish. 250113

Fairly cloudy bright gold in the glass with a big fluffy white head. Liquid looks fairly still and settled. Floral, perfumy notes in the aroma, with some grapefuit, melon, mango and tangy american hops. All the notes from the aroma are in the flavour with those summer fruits to the fore - some peach notes in there too. The hops give a really nice backbone for all that sweetness to rest. Carbonation is quite soft, mouthfeel is medium bodied and quite slick. Finish as long as a summers day, with maltiness forward. Really nice.

Bottle. Pours with a lightly hazy golden hued body with a small white head. Aromas are hoppy, grassy, tea, medium alcohol, bready malt, citrusy and slightly herbal. Flavors might be a bit faded, but there is some slightly sweet malt, lightly grassy and lemony hop character. Slightly herbal. A bit to sweet, medium bodied.

Light misty, huge white frothy head. Lots of classic hops, straightforward but nice full feel. Taste is rich, good amounts of classic hops and a ending surprising sweetness to smooth things out. Surprising and with an original English approach. Excellent. (75cl bottle from Colin, thanks!)

Bottle from McGee. Hazy, gold-orange pour with a vigorous, fine-bubbled white head. Nose is slightly boozy and funky with a hint of malty sweetness. Medium body and intense, fine carbonation. Ethanol bitterness predominates, but some citrus hops and caramel are present. Finish is a bit sweet, which I didn’t expect. Too hot for me, not enough hop aroma.
