Imperial maerzen. IT could be so much better but for a 11% maerzen that was thrown in a barrel it isn’t bad.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Glouglouburp (5545) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 25, 2013
In short: A straightforward caramelized, boozy and oaky brutal sipper. Meh.
How: Bottle 750ml, corked & caged. Consumed 16 months after the beer release. Bottle from oakbluf, thanks a lot Scott.
The look: Cloudy copper body topped by a small beige head.
In long: Nose is very oaky over a sweet caramelized maltiness and some alcohol fumes. Taste is very caramelized upfront, a whole lot of caramelized cereals, very light fruity notes (red fruits), a lot of wood (virgin oak sensation), alcohol is very apparent but without to much bite. High sweetness sensation and quite boozy. Heavily carbonated, almost to soda-pop level, it makes this monster beer easier to drink but also kills any subtleties the may have. Nothing offensive here but very straightforward, lacks complexity. With such a monster barrel aged beer I couldn’t tell the beer is a lager. Just another sipper, not bad, but very simple, very brutal and low drinkability. I was very disappointed by this beer, and imho it really sucks that I have to put-up with all sorts of disappointments like this only to eventually die at the end, living is stupid.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 brinehart (152) - Colorado, USA - MAR 1, 2013
Sampled 3/1/2013. Big leathery oak. This beer has aged well. Marzen under the oak is very nice. Oxidation playing very nice here. What a treat.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 kevinator (315) - The Colony, Texas, USA - FEB 24, 2013
I had this when it was about 1 year old and just now at near 3 years. I can say it has continued to blend and wood flavors became more pronounced. The carbonation held up. The aromas were strong malt, almond and a little sour. Nice copper color with one finger of white head. I will say this is the most unique lager I’ve ever had. Not a strong hops presence. Good sipping beer. Alcohol was present but not over done.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Marheb (1166) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 16, 2013

Bottle (750 ml). Traded by dsgolovin, thanks! Clear amber with a medium creamy and good lacing. Aroma of malt, fruits, grains, caramel and resinous notes. Taste is moderately sweet with grain, cedar, malt, nuts, caramel fruits and resinous notes. Mouthfeel is clean and dry. Alcohol is present. I liked it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JulienHuxley (1705) - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 20, 2013
Bottle. Clear copper gold pour, head that vanishes quickly. Aroma is quite fruity, lots fo berries, malty, peaches, caramel, fresh grain. Taste is sweet, grainy, alcohol comes off as a fruity almost sweet flavor. Palate is a bit slick, I would have liked to see some more carbonation, but this was pretty good.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 vyvvy (3222) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - NOV 23, 2012
Thanks to Joe at our Florissant tasting for this one. Pours copper with a small white head that quickly turns to a ring. The aroma is very oaky and fruity. It is fairly sweet and has some apricots, floralness, vanilla and alcohol heat. It has a medium / full body with a small amount of carbonation. The flavor starts with lots of vanilla and oak with some caramel malt, dried nectar fruits and a bit of alcohol warmth. The finish has heavier alcohol, oaky wood and more sweetness. Didn’t get to try this fresh to know how it started, but it is pretty interesting right now.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 seymour (1099) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - NOV 5, 2012
Shared from a big brown corked bottle into a mini schooner glass, thanks Joe. It poured a cloudy deep amber color with thin but persistent off-white head and a little lace. It looked like a double-Oktoberfest, but didn’t smell as much like one. Faint aromas and flavors of pils and caramel malts, even fainter peppery noble hops, but dominated by oxidation, vanilla and tannins of wood-aging.Very alcoholic, but not in a terribly hot/fusel way. Vyvvy pointed out the oak aspects were probably concealing what would otherwise be perceived as flaws. The bottle was two years old, probably brewed up to a year before that, and I don’t think such lengthy aging benefits a high-gravity pale-ish lager. Drinkable, not offensive, but no longer the really good beer it surely once was.
