COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Darkness has eclipsed the Woodcut Series for the 7th offering, a Russian Imperial Stout. The thick and hardy brew boasts rich chocolate malt flavor with a touch of roasted coffee character. The bold base is enhanced by hints of vanilla toasted hazelnut and oak from new barrels. Each Woodcut offering is a truly limited edition beer with a unique flavor that comes from select hops, fine malted barley, and out brewers’ careful aging process. Enjoy!

We don’t have words in the English language to describe this. Cherry, oak, coffee, vanilla, scotch, toffee, pineapple. Hops is present as a spice (clove) . Very milkstout direction.

Black pour with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of chocolate, roasted malt and oak. The flavor is very similar with a good bit of alcohol melding well with the chocolate and oak. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle (750 ml). From Marcus, thanks! Bottled in 2013.

Appearance: Pitch black with medium easy to revive beige head and some lacing.

Aroma: Roasted malts, chocolate, vegetal notes, quite a bit of oak, boozy notes... it feels a bit old.

Taste: Medium sweetness. Brighter (or at least less old) than the aroma, coffee roastiness, mild acidic presence, chocolate, vegetal notes, alcohol and light coffee bitterness.

Palate: Full body. Medium carbonation. Roasty finish. Vegetal aftertaste.

Overall: Not bad at all, but it’s either a bit too old or it was too vegetal to start. Taste is well balanced though. It’s a bit boozy, but normal considering the abv. Average RIS.

Bottle shared. Opaque black pour with thin creamy tan foam. Aroma is really caramel forward, tons of chocolate, lots of wood as well, light vegetal notes, cocoa. Taste is bitter, powdery cocoa, licorice, lots of wood, boozy. Palate is full bodied with med carbonation, very boozy . Decent.

Big beer that just didn’t quite work for me. I can see where it’s going, but I picked up some odd flavors and then as a result mouthfeel was a bit off. Probably for someone else this is a huge winner. Not for me.

750 mL bottle at the 9th Richmond Rare & Unusual Epic Tasting, Richmond, VA, 11/30/14. Pours a clear dark brown with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, nuts, herbal hops, tobacco, leather. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, wood, nuts, caramel, booze. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness and heat. Nice beer.

750ml bottle pours out black topped with a tan head. Nose is roast malts chocolate coffee leather and some nice vanilla notes. Taste is once again vanilla chocolate coffee a nice oak touch and a solid end. This is one of the first wood cut beers I could really get behind.

"wish lister from CO. I really dug the Woodcut quad, but barreled stouts have not been Odell’s forte (otherwise an awesome brewer). Looking forward to this, though, and it did not diappoint. It was just a touch light in color and thin for a 12% beer, but it smelled and tasted so good, you just didn’t care. I didn’t get any "toasted hazelnut" but there was an insanely complex tapestry of roasted coffee, oak, chocolate, vanilla, raisins, tobacco and a thing or two I couldn’t place (probably nuances of the oak). REALLY well done with the agin here. "

This was a behemoth. Sweet oak and roasted aroma. There was a semblance of bourbon even though from what I understand, they use new barrels. Very dark and syrupy with a good tan head. Lacing was slight. Heavy and oily as well as creamy. Smooth with good but understated carbonation. Pleasant flavors of sweet roasted malts that carried through. Oak, chocolate and vanilla with some hops presence. Complex.
