COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed for Russian Royalty in the early 18th century, this style was born of necessity. The porter which was originally ordered spoiled en route. In order for the beer to survive the trip from England to the courts of Russia, the hops and alcohol were dramatically increased. O’Dempsey’s Your Black Heart Russian Imperial Stout combines a silky mouth feel with a balance between sweet malts and bitter hops that pairs well with strong cheeses, dark chocolates and fine cigars. Truly a luxury befitting even your Royal Highnesss. Enjoy.

Winter Beer Fest, Philadelphia: Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is mostly chocolate, not very much coffee, roasted malt. This is a rather light Imperial Stout. this is not anything all that impressive either. Mostly chocolate. It is lightly sweet. It ain’t very bitter. Meh.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark brown head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, dark bread, light raisin, smoke, light char, herbal, light pine, and roast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of deep roast/black malt and light-moderate hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, dark bread, light raisin, smoke, light char, herbal, light pine, and roast/smokey earthiness. Fair amount of earthy hop/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roast, dark bread, molasses, smoke, light char, and roast/smoke earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of deep roast/black malt and light-moderate hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy, and moderately chalky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial stout. All around good complexity and balance of deep roast/black malts and light-moderate hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle from ck1, thx bro! Black pour with brown head. Aroma has chocolate, dark fruits, and later some anise. Taste is dark chocolate, black licorice and a bit of roast. Some caramelly malts. Medium to full body did with some alcohol. Finish is of bittersweet chocolate; slightly more bitter than sweet with some strength. Initially there was grape presence which was not attractive but down through the glass became very solid and representative 14.4.

Black with very little head. Roasty, chalky fusel notes on the aroma. Charcoal and a bit of chocolate with considerable bitterness and a definite alcohol note on the end. Creamy mouthfeel.

12 oz bottle served in a tulip. Aroma is sweet and chocolatey. I get a strange candy/fruit smell that I can't place. A little chalky. Appearance is jet black with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Very fine bubbles. Taste has big roast with chocolate and a little coffee. Considerably sweet. Moderately bitter and a little heat on the end. Mouthfeel is thick and silky. Decent carbonation. This is what I like in a stout. Overall I thoroughly enjoy this beer. I wish the heat was a little more subdued, and I could use a little more roast/less sweetness. But those are minor things. I plan to buy more to age. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark beer with only a small tan head. Big rich molasses and roast grain nose with nice blooming alcohol. Thick, oily mouth feel. Lots of molasses, dark caramel, buttered toast, Quite a bit of hop bitterness in the finish. Very nice Impy Stout.

Poured from a bottle, producing thick, foamy head. Roasted, and a bit smokey, cofffe flavor.

Growler sample at RBWG courtesy of thebeersommelier. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, char, dark chocolate, some black coffee notes. Not as sweet as the description says, but more dry and roasted.

Poured from a bottle into a stout glass. Aromas of sweet raisins, milk chocolate, and fresh malted grain, straight from the bag. Dark black with a tan head. I’m really shocked at how much I like the taste of this beer, based on previous experiences with O’Dempsey’s. Full chocolate and tobacco flavor up front, with a firm hop finish that lingers and leaves a great taste. I love how rich and smooth this beer is up front, and how sharp and lingering it is on the back end. This is the epitome of "begging for another sip". Really stunned by how much I like this rock solid imperial stout.

Poured black with aromas of light roast, dusted cocoa, light earth and some feint almonds. Flavors were the same a little thin in the mouth feel for stout s for me but decent overall.
