COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed for Russian Royalty in the early 18th century, this style was born of necessity. The porter which was originally ordered spoiled en route. In order for the beer to survive the trip from England to the courts of Russia, the hops and alcohol were dramatically increased. O’Dempsey’s Your Black Heart Russian Imperial Stout combines a silky mouth feel with a balance between sweet malts and bitter hops that pairs well with strong cheeses, dark chocolates and fine cigars. Truly a luxury befitting even your Royal Highnesss. Enjoy.

Bottle. Perfectly black body with a light brown colored head. The nose has some rich mushrooms and tobacco. There is also some almond. The body on this is thick and lightly carbonated. This tastes of pancakes and sweetened coffee. There is also some light roast and amaretto in the finish. A decent impy stout that is not cloying.

i’ve had plenty upon plenty of RIS beers over the years and after awhile they all look the same coming out of the bottle but even so, i was surprised at how black this one looked and w/ a huge toffee colored head to boot. really a great tasting beer that i particularily like b/c it’s only 8% and not some monster at 10+. good beer from the palmetto state.

Bottle. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with some dark chocolate and a hint of nuttiness. Flavor has a strong roasted malt note with a bit of bitter chocolate and some coffee that comes out in the finish.

BeerandBlues2 (7465) - Hanover, Maryland, USA - SEP 2, 2012
Bottle received via trade with The BeerSommelier. Pours opaque with a small, frothy tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and coffee malt, dark fruity esters, licorice, alcohol, and spicy hops. Flavor is dark malt dominant with spicy hops and light bitterness, dark fruity esters and a sweet finish, though it does begin drying late. Full body, medium carbonation.

Bottled. Poured very near black with a tall, creamy, well-retained beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, roasty, toasty chocolates, black malts, and vanilla.. warmer chocolate biscuits came through on the 2nd wave.. warm and well-presented. The flavor found more burnt black malts and fresh earthy bitterness than anything else.. some vanilla and blended chocolates as well.. picked up spicy pine and black pepper on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavier-bodied and silky smooth on the palate.. very well-balanced.. lovely brew!

A very good rich stout. Yet very smooth with a velvety chocolate taste. Pretty sweet with a lack of alcohol in the flavor and aroma.

The head here is pretty interesting and a dark tan. Leaves a nice lacing. That head adds a bit of creamy textures to the first couple of sips. The flavor is extra bitter sweet almost a little overpowering on the bitter part. Would be even better if that was toned down one spec. Roasty coffee aroma. Flavor has a touch of chocolate. Finish has a back of the throat bitter burn. Pretty decent with a couple of tweaks this would be exceptional.
