COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed for Russian Royalty in the early 18th century, this style was born of necessity. The porter which was originally ordered spoiled en route. In order for the beer to survive the trip from England to the courts of Russia, the hops and alcohol were dramatically increased. O’Dempsey’s Your Black Heart Russian Imperial Stout combines a silky mouth feel with a balance between sweet malts and bitter hops that pairs well with strong cheeses, dark chocolates and fine cigars. Truly a luxury befitting even your Royal Highnesss. Enjoy.

Aroma: Gnarly (in a good way) marriage of hop and subtle chocolate/cocoa vapors. Appearance: The bastard is dark and dense. Thin short-lived head. Little to no lacing. Tis not important. I didn’t buy it for the foam. Taste: Jebus . . . incredible mouthfeel. Medium sweet body combines with bitterness of hops. Palate: medium body, oily feel, long finish, fantastic. Overall: Great hybrid stout. The addition of the hops to the stout give it an incredible character, body, and taste.

12 oz bottle. deep black thick pour with a 3/4" tan head which fades to a thin lacing. big roasted nose with coffee and chocolate with a light sweetness... would like more bitterness on the nose from all those hops. med to full body with deep coffee notes, chocolate, roasted barley and sweet dark fruits with a touch of smoke. smooth and chewy body throughout. the high levels of roast starts to dominate the mouthfeel and flavor profile. intense dark smoke roasted malt finish with burnt coffee notes and a bit of astringency. this one needs to pull back on the dark malts.

12oz bottle, 4pk. Black pour, dark brown head. Aroma of bboze, burnt malts, wooded hops, and loads of licorice and tobacco. Tastes of burnt grain, chalk/cigar ash, unsweetened cocoa, and fruit esters. Thinner character than I expected, but still medium bodied. Earthy and nice, a well done Stout.

Bottle as an extra from bobertkuekn. Deep brown color that borders on black. Rich, oily looking pour that leaves a small tan head. Slight chocolate, light roast coffee aromas, and some fruit character like figs. Pretty standard aroma. First sip is intense bittersweet and dark chocolate. Wow... those really come on strong and continue to linger on through a long finish. Fucking intense. Some roast coffee does appear towards the finish as well, but it really is dominated by the chocolate aspects. Pretty strong warming feeling after each sip. Light bodied for how it appears. Just too much of the chocolate, and not enough of anything else. Still, this is a pretty solid imperial stout. Just nothing I would seek out.

On cask at Atlanta Cask Fest 2012. Pours a dark imp stout brown with a tan head. Nose is roasted malts, dark chocolate, black coffee, and licorice. Flavor is similar- dark chocolate and black coffee dominate, while there is some earth and licorice in there, too. Nice stout.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 12 oz bottle. Tar black pour, mocha colored head, thin cost of lacing. Aroma is chock full of bittersweet chocolate, some day old coffee and a bit of black potting soil. Flavor is full-bodied and rich with some licorice notes, some baker’s unsweetened dark chocolate, a bit of day old cold coffee. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Surprisingly solid.

Strong, smoky aroma has firm tones of coffee and semi-sweet chocolate with hints of licorice and anchovies. It pours a rich, opaque coffee brown just a hair above black with a thick, fairly persistent tan head. Flavor has notes of roast coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and molasses with hints of licorice, anchovy and hops and just a touch of sweetness. Full-bodied texture is fizzy and lively, quite satisfying. Definitely fit for royalty!

Appearance: Pours a thick, black body with a slow-growing, didn’t-get-there, short-lived, cafe head.

Smell: Roasted malts scattered with distilled alcohol and some portions of dark chocolate, though not quite as much that plays in the taste. Faint, underlying resinous hops and dark fruit esters with some late-breaking graham cracker.

Taste: Squares of dark chocolate fused to black coffee-accented, hard roasted malts and joined by sweet burnt caramel. Plump grape dark fruitiness. A small pinch of Captain Black pipe tobacco. Hop flavor is somewhat masked by the heavy maltiness, but the bitterness comes through abetted by a bit of astringency from the roasted grains and egged on the alcohol. Another thoughtful round of roast, chocolate, and dark fruits nearing the enduring finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: A fairly decent imperial stout. Some time in the cellar may benefit this one.

Bottle.Pour was a deep dark black with an average sized (1-2 finger) medium brown creamy head and had fair lacing. The aroma was of burnt bread malts, a mild resin hop and a leathery yeast with notes of bitter-sweet chocolate, molasses, roasted coffee and had a pronounced alcohol presence. Taste was malty sweet and very lightly bitter with a mild notes of chocolate and molasses at first with a nice bitter strong coffee flavor, a hint of smoke and a strong alcohol finish. The flavor hung around for a long duration with the taste of coffee and alcohol left to settle on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was very full in body and dry yet creamy in texture with a soft carbonation. Overall a nice and strong flavored Imperial Stout with the coffee and chocolate flavors blending very well with the high alcohol finish.
