Originally brewed for Russian Royalty in the early 18th century, this style was born of necessity. The porter which was originally ordered spoiled en route. In order for the beer to survive the trip from England to the courts of Russia, the hops and alcohol were dramatically increased. O’Dempsey’s Your Black Heart Russian Imperial Stout combines a silky mouth feel with a balance between sweet malts and bitter hops that pairs well with strong cheeses, dark chocolates and fine cigars. Truly a luxury befitting even your Royal Highnesss. Enjoy.

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours black with a foamy dark tan head that bubbles quickly away. A burnt malt aroma that sort of suggests tobacco. Not necessarily sweet tobacco either. Very smooth. Med body. Flavor is sweet chocolate, anise, dark fruit, and some seriously burnt malt. Oscillates from sweet stout to really strong impy. Mostly impy tho. There’s a lot of flavor in this one. Very, very nice.

Bottle received via trade with The BeerSommelier. Pours opaque with a small, frothy tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and coffee malt, dark fruity esters, licorice, alcohol, and spicy hops. Flavor is dark malt dominant with spicy hops and light bitterness, dark fruity esters and a sweet finish, though it does begin drying late. Full body, medium carbonation.

12 ounce bottle from Bottle Revolution, Asheville, NC. Pours a near black color with a large frothy dark brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of cocoa, roasted malts, coffee, grain and a very faint tobacco note. The taste is nutty notes, roasted malts, sweet malts, chocolate, coffee, a bitter ashy note, bitter roast and bitter hops. Medium-full bodied. Might be a bit off-balance but still a very nice beer.
