COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beersel is an American-brewed Sour Ale, made in the Belgian tradition. It uses Castle pale malt and raw wheat that is turbid mashed. Beersel also uses 10-year old hops, a 3 Fonteinen brettanomyces culture as well as lacto bacillus before maturing for 20 months in white wine barrels. The result is a complex sour ale that finishes incredibly dry and refreshing.

Tasted at the Triple Rock Sour Fest on 2/8/10. This sour ale pours a slightly hazy yellow gold color. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is tart and fruity. A medium bodied sour. The malts are fruity and tart. Funky and tart with a whole lot of grapefruit flavors. Nice stuff. Will probably even get funkier with some age. Kind of amazing seeing as this is one of the first beers this brewery has produced. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is tart.

On tap at City Beer in SF. Pours and awesome hazy bright yellow/golden color with a small white head. Intense lemony sour aroma. Damn this one is citric. Flavor is also very tart and almost all citrus. Lemon, orange, grapefruit, and sour apple. Some mild acetic notes. Comes together extremely well. Great intense acidity on the palate. Sharp and biting, yet very crisp and refreshing even, like an awesome lemonade without the sweetness. Overall, this is excellent. I think I like it better than Beatification. Odonata is brewing some great stuff. If they start bottling more, they’re going to be hype city.

Clear yellow with a fizzy white head. Strong sour lemon aroma. Sticky mouth feel and a not too agressive lemon and green apple taste.

Draft. Amber beer with a whitish head. Tart/sour aroma with lemon. Lemony flavor with tart/sour and acetic notes. Medium bodied. Tartness/sourness lingers with acetic notes and lemon. Nice.

Tap, City Beer Store. Rosa is still quite fresh in my mind, so I can compare the two fairly easily. Pours a hazy pale yellow-orange with a very small head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is lemons, light funk, grapes, clean grain and oak. The flavor is rather sour, though not up to Rosa, with lemons, limes, grapefruit rind and sour grapes. The brett is mild but more forward than R. Feel is quite dry with less pucker than R. So, Beersel seems brettier and less tart than R. The brett is still relatively mild with some light funk chiming in and a drier feel. Excellent sour. Odonata makes great beer.

Draft @ Triple Rock Sour Monday. Pours a hazy, golden color; thin off-white head with patchy lacing. Intense amounts of funk, cobwebs, lemon-based acidity and hints of grapefruit and wheat; an impressively dense, funky nose with a slightly relaxed acidity compared to the Rosa; certainly reminiscent of the 3F gueuze character, with a heightened lactic presence; very very funky. Medium body: lots of intense, lemony acidity here: cobwebby, funk, and hints of wheat at the core; a touch of very light honey / citrus at the center of things, but otherwise unabashedly dry; a beautiful, citrus-centered sour ale that harkens towards 3F with a touch of additional mustiness (and perhaps white grape skins) and sweetness at the core. A lovely sour ale. Long-lasting tartness, lots of citrus and funk with an emergent, slight toastiness at the far end; not bone dry, but close.

On tap at Triple Rock Sour Monday. Pours golden with no head and a sour fruit aroma. There is an intense grapefruit flavor, causing this beer to taste like a very rich gueuze. The aged hops add a subtle bitterness and a smooth finish. This brew is all about the carefully crafted yeast action and is aged to perfection.
