4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Cannile (12) - California, USA - OCT 5, 2009UPDATED: NOV 2, 2009 750ml bottle from City Beer Store in San Francisco. Poured into North Coast snifter. Pours a murky deep red, strong long-lasting tan head, excellent lacing. Aroma is mildly tart up front of sour cherries and dark fruit, vanilla, caramel, a hint of toffee, and rich with oak. A beautiful medley of so many different smells coming together and working so beautifully with each other. Body is medium-heavy. Taste is mildly tart and fruity at first, dark Belgian sugars in the mix, oak, caramel, vanilla, toffee (everything very similar to its aroma), a hint of light citrusy grapes pulls through near the finish. Definitely a rebuy. And as a matter of fact, one of the best beers I’ve had in a while. I’ll guarantee you ... once word gets out that this beer exists ... people are going to go nuts and the supply will not meet the demand. Cheers!!

Dvelcich Dan and I made the trade for this bottle. Opened it at Zwanze Day 2012. Pours a murky brown in color, with a wisp of off-white head. Nose is rich brown sugar, dark fruit, raisin, some cherry, and some caramel. Great depth in the nose. Complex flavor in the character ilas well, rich malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, slightly tannic, and some booze. Light carbonation, boozy, medium mouthfeel, and a moderate finish. Great quad, and I generally dislike the style. Great depth, perfect nose, solid experience.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 JAXSON (480) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 21, 2012
Dark pour with cherry highlights and a medium beige head. Nose is wine barrel with a fairly expressive malt character of raisin, port, earthy spices. Lots of strange complexity in the mouth -- aged port, ripe raisin and prune, cardamom seed, cinnamon. Super integration and complexity between the malt and port qualities. This is what McKenzie has been trying to do the last two years. Finish is strawberry jam which carries on for a good 30 seconds. Some light oxidation on the finish. Feel is fabulous, soft, thick, rich with a wash of tiny bubbles. You would have to enjoy port and barrel-forward beers to really appreciate this. Pretty great, maybe too barrel-forward for me even but it worked very well and it’s a pleasure to sip on.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sarro (111) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - OCT 17, 2011
Shared by Sean, thanks! Pours a dark, muddled copper brown with one finger head. Smell is Belgian candied sugar, some subtle malt, and a little spice--perhaps cinnamon. Taste is sweet malt that continues through with light cherry. Picked up on plenty of layers of sweetness in this one along with a deep finish. Low carbonation and medium body mouth feel. Tasty!

750mL Bottle. Aroma strong prune, plum, candi sugar and Belgian caramel with a touch of barrel. Flavors are really rich and dark. I’ve scarcely had malty beers this complex. Somewhere in the middle is a notable sun-dried fruit and Pedro Ximenez raisin flavor that goes back and forth with the chewy complex mid-dark malts. This has gotta come from the combination with the Cab barrel. Great beer!

750ml Bottle with a big thanks to ditmier. Pours out dark brown topped with a nice head. Aroma was sweetness, molasses, pit fruit, oak, caramel, cherries, and spice. Taste is more of the sweetness, but it changes gears from pit fruit to more cherries. Along with the dark cherries is an array of spice, vanilla, and wood.
