In the supermarket here in Holland, Oettinger is considered a lowbudget beer, available for the same price (0,55 eurocents for a 500ml can) as the 2 other brands of the cheapest beer (AH Basic, the supermarkets’ own brand and Lander Brau). Out of all the lowbudget beers of the Dutch supermarkets, this is my favourite. It is nothing special but that’s what makes it good. Great for a night of drinking with friends.

Poured from a 33cl bottle bought at the nearby Lidl... Clear golden with a stable white head. Okayish. Have seen ’em better though. Aroma is quite pilsener-like. Slight grassy nose, some malts, bit grainy... Some sourness. Pretty soft in the nose though. Not that bad actually. Taste is quite nice. Oettinger surpised me a lot. Bit fruity and bready... Nice hoppy bitterness and quite a enjoyable grassy (slightly metallic) crisp finish with a nice lingering bitter. Bit sweet for a pilsener, but it works out pretty fine. Light bodied, thinnish texture (not watery) with a lively carbonation. Very nice palate. Wanted to rate this beer after several talks about what a good pilsener had to be. After all the Heinekens and Amstel I have pissed away, this one came in as quite a good shot. Lowbudget, yet still of high quality. If they would serve this at the Amsterdam pubs instead of that Heineken piss, I would be drunk eight days a week with just half the money spent on beer. Very good pilsener.

500ml bottle: poured golden yellow with a smallish white head. Lots of tiny streaming bubbles coming up from the bottom. Mild spicy hop aroma. Light spiciness in the flavor with just a touch of cardboard. Very mild fruit-slight grape. Nice full bitterness in the finish. Pretty good beer and very drinkable.

Light golden yellow and pours with a high white top. A slight bitterness without any sweet or fruitiness. Easy to drink yet a casual pilsener.

Pleasant, almost fresh, noble hops aroma with some caramel in the finish. Clear straw with rapidly descending white foam. Altough I did not detect it in the aroma, there is a fair bit of DMS in this beer that gives it a nice corn flavour that goes well with the pleasant malty profile. As the beer warmed, this began to get out of hand. I still think it was a nice flavour, when in the mood for a German Pils meets Pabst Blue Ribbon hybrid. Crisp and clean, with a healthy dose of carbonation. Quite quaffable.

This is a decent pils. While puils is not my favourite style, this is a great beer for a session as it is fairly light nad the price is amazing. Bought in Park and Shop Tsing Yi Garden, this easily beats other similar style beers from China. Very enjoyable.
