2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
(Oettinger Schwarzbier) Bottle 500 ml at home, served into a glass tankard, ABV 4.9%
Brown coloured body, almost two fingers of thin, tan head, with average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass.
Suspiciously sour notes on the aroma, dust, malts.
Taste is sweet, not much in there, some malts and caramel, metal on the finish.
Medium thin bosy, carbonation on the low side.
Okay I guess, surely I didn’t hate it but it was a bit boring.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Can. As Oettinger Schwarz. Dark brown with faint red hues and a nice, slowly-dissipating, big tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, a bit of chocolate, dark bread, toast and a light roasty touch. Sweet flavor, malty, caramelly, somewhat sugary, with some dark bread, toast, a nutty note and faint bitterish and roasty hints in the finish. Too sweet, but passable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Beautifully black with coarse-grained, thick foam. Smells cozy and homely (in the positive sense). The taste is rather unexciting, though - no personality compared to other schwarzbiers. That is until the aftertaste kicks in; this is quite good.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a clear, not quite pitch black body with a light brown well-lasting head. The nose has some roasty notes, chokolate and rye. The taste is fairly mild, sweet with a dry lasting finish. Carbonation feels smooth but is pretty high. The mouthfeel is average. A decent easy-drinking beer.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
0.5L bottle. Pours clear black with a rocky tan head that dissipates quickly. Mild aromas of roasted malt and minerals (iron). Not much flavor going on in this one. Some light cereal grain, a bit of roasted malt and molasses. Middle/end is herby hop and some nutty flavors (not particularly pleasant). Medium-body with a thin mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, a pretty mediocre schwarzbier. Missing a lot of the flavor/aroma profile that makes this style nice.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Western German interpretation of the style with creamy, light beige, opening head and very dark burgundy colour, blackish but still transparent, clear. Straightforward caramel aroma, toasted bread, coffee, some bitter chocolate, floral hops, dried fruits, iron. Caramel taste, soft and slick, metallic, one-dimensional roasted bitterness, bit thin but still ensuring a long finish. Mediocre, in all.
