COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black as a cold winter night, this beer was designed to fit the season instead of conforming to the rules of any style category. The unique blend of seemingly enless ingredients include: toasted hemp seeds, oats, malted rye, wheat, Amarillo and Citrahops and a Belgian yeast strain. Donít be afraid of the myriad of flavors in the balanced black ale as it is deceivingly soft and sessionable especially during the dark days of winter.

[Bottle] Very dark brown in color. Small but lasting head. Earthy aroma includes light hops and some anise. Roasted malts, rye bread, moderate bitterness, some cocoa and some vegetal notes in the taste. Sticky palate, but highly drinkable. Pretty good. Tasting notes from early 2012.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade. Consumed 10/14/2012. The appearance is a jet black colored body that leaves an off-white one finger head that lasts for at least thirty seconds. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. A thin, nice foamy filmy lacing appears and lasts through half way through the beer and then spider webs into oblivion. The smell has chocolate up front with some light malty-aroma like qualities inside of a sort of coffee. The taste is balanced between the previously mentioned flavors and adds an earthy sort of hemp as well. On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body with a dry aftertaste. It still feels great on my tongue and maintains a decent drinkability for the beer. Overall, this is a good beer for me, though the hops were more subdued than most "black ales" (mostly non-existent) I still liked it and would have it again.

FROM NOTES: June 30, í12 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. A: Roasted malt with some grain notes and a hint of a sweet chocolate. A: Pours black with a very small head that quickly fades and leaves little to no lacing. T: Follows the nose with roast malt and earthy notes. Finishes dry with a bittersweet chocolate. P: Medium body, smooth and well balanced. O: Much better than I expected. Very quaffable, easy to drink the whole 6 before you realize it...

Dark red pour with an off-white head. The aroma is full of biscuit malt. The flavor has some strong roasted malt notes as well as some cocoa and hemp notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A great dark chocolate color with a thick initial head. Nutty notes and a clean finish for a dark beer.

12 oz bottle (screw top) from Baruniís in Baden, PA. Perhaps a tad too sweet, but overall quite enjoyable. For a black ale it holds up just fine.

Draft to pint. Looks solid; a transparent orangish-brown with thin off-white lacing. Smells doughy. Tastes like it smells with a weird taste that detracts from the flavor. Average (at best) on the palate. Underwhelming.

Aroma - Nutty and malty, fresh cooked bread, milk chocolate, hint of fruit. Different, thatís for sure. Iíd give this an 8 if the aroma was amped up a bit more. Appearance - Dark brown on the pour. Held up to light, the amber red comes through a bit more, but still very dark. Small light tan head that dissipated pretty quickly. Good amount of sticky lacing on the glass though. Taste - Nutty flavor up front with a very nice roasted malt taste, dark fruit, toasted oats, slightly buscuity, creamy. The hops, (or is that hemp), comes through very well. A lot heavier tasting than most other black ales Iíve had. If I didnít know better, Iíd swear this was a porter. Palate - Very creamy with low carbonation. Like I just said, a lot heavier than most other ales. Definitely feels more like a porter. Overall - Easy to drink and strong on taste! Probably the heaviest ale Iíve ever had. Iím a big porter fan, so this one is right up my alley. Definitely worth a try for the porter and stout fans!
