COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black as a cold winter night, this beer was designed to fit the season instead of conforming to the rules of any style category. The unique blend of seemingly enless ingredients include: toasted hemp seeds, oats, malted rye, wheat, Amarillo and Citrahops and a Belgian yeast strain. Don’t be afraid of the myriad of flavors in the balanced black ale as it is deceivingly soft and sessionable especially during the dark days of winter.

Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted rye malt and leather aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet tingly finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Draft pint at the HandleBar at their Thursday night trivia. Pours a very dark brown, just about black, with a thin, creamy khaki cap. Aroma of earthy hops, roasted malts, toasted oats and grains, brown sugar, citrus, and resin. Flavor of earthy hops, roasted malts, grass, earth, rye, toasted brown sugar, oats and cereal grains, and faint citrusy resin. Light-medium bodied, with a sweet, roasty, earthy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Nice balance of hop bitterness and roastiness. Exceeded my expectations for sure. Cool beer.

Draft to pint. Looks solid; a transparent orangish-brown with thin off-white lacing. Smells doughy. Tastes like it smells with a weird taste that detracts from the flavor. Average (at best) on the palate. Underwhelming.

Nearly perfectly black colored body with a little bit of mahogany red at the edges when held to light. There is a light khaki head on top. The nose has anise and must. There is also a little bit of walnuts and black tea. The taste is black tea with some anise. There is also some walnuts and a little bit of bread dough. Nicely made.

EithCubes (4704) - New Jersey, USA - AUG 5, 2011
Bottle. Lightly grainy, lightly toasty nose, caramel base with spicy rye and a nice dank/woody contribution from the Amarillo. Light chocolate tone. Copper-highlighted brown with a sudsy tan head. Black taste, light roast with light citrus accents, lots of beautiful silken chocolate tones (as a chocolate porter) and some burnt coffee. Dryish and crisp, low bitterness, a little hop grit and stickiness. Medium body and very easy drinking. Really enjoyed this as a layered, complex beer for every day.
