It reminds me of the Alaskan Smoked Porter, except that I can actually buy this one here and for a reasonable price too ($3.99 for a bomber). I sat outside on a nice evening and drank the beer while smoking a very well-aged La Gloria Cubana Wavell Maduro, a very rich tasting cigar that would overwhelm most beers, but this smoked porter held its own and the two were a perfect match. A good introduction to a smoked beer for someone who has never tried one - there is enough good porter in here so as not to overwhelm the uninitiated.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 8, 2009 Pours a very dark chestnut brown color that is almost black with slight mahogany edges when held to a light source and a one finger tan head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.
Smokey aroma with lots of roasted malt. Hints of chocolate, toffee, coffee and faint hops.
Very nice smokey flavor and medium body. Bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted coffee, burnt toast, toasted malt, caramel and toffee. Smooth with a silkiness up front that is followed by the prominent smokiness that lingers into a dry finish.

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Pours a brown color with thin tannish head. Aroma is of faint smoke, light caramel malt and light hops knows. Taste is of sweet malt, light smoke, bread, and faint grains. Palate has an odd tang to it. I was expecting more smoke and more depth to it, but it just seems off balanced. Not bad, but something I won’t be purchasing again. rader58 (195), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2009 Pours a deep dark brown touching on black. Aroma of smoke. Seriously smells like a Bar-B-Que. Smokey! Very intense smoke, not unlike a campfire, in the mouth. In the finish, smoke diminishes and toasted malt and molasses comes through. After allowing to set and warm in the glass, the smoke subsides and the molasses toasted malt flavors start to come through. alagnak (386), Littleton, Colorado, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 27, 2009 Bottle from theisti. This one somehow got in the back of the beer fridge. Poured directly @ cellar temp (~55). Nice cold evening to pull it out. Nose is, obviously, smoky, a little game sausage and dirty pine smoke. Initial taste is heavy smoke, with a little bacon and a nice sweetness reminiscient of root beer. Hiigh carbonation makes the finish a little prickly, like seltzer, but creates a nice crispness that offsets the heavy smoke. Just a little watery. As it warms a bit, some interesting tartness plays in the middle as well. Interesting beer. Thanks, Tim. phaleslu (592), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 19, 2009 12 oz. bottle from The Party Source. Pours a near black color with a small, quickly fading tan head. Good aroma of smoked wood, chocolate malt, toast, and dry smoked meat. I love smoked porters on the nose but they often can’t pull off a balanced flavor, and this is no different, as the smoke overwhelms the rest of the palate. The flavor is restrained by the somewhat light, watery, carbonated body. Some bite from the carbonation, a little sweetness. Dry, smoky finish. FunkyBrewster (549), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Oct 17, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours nearly black with a nice creamy tan head. Nice aroma of chocolate malt and smoked wood. Not as much of a meaty character as people say compared to the likes of shlenkerla’s beers, but still a nice bit of malt and toasty sweet nose. Flavor has some nice characteristics, I like the chocolate and the light not overbearing earthiness with the wood and smoke. It finished really quickly though, with very little roundness and oomph in the aftertaste. Medium light body, a bit watery and a soda like carbonation. Very disappointed with this beer. topherh (943), Kearney, Missouri, USA
