jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Feb 19, 2009 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Black in color with a decent sized beige head. Aroma is of bacon, smoke, wood and whiskey. Taste is of roasted malt, smoke and coffee. JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Feb 18, 2009 Brown color with a small light tan head. I catch smoked vegetables in the aroma. Some sweet bourbon, ham and hints of dark berries as well. Somewhat complex, but a bit too odd. Flavors include caramel, cocoa, vanilla, tar, dark chocolate and black malt. Nothing gets to heavy in the flavor. Rather well balanced, still not much depth. A bit thin in feel. The whiskey flavors are there, the porter flavors are there; things just seem a bit disjointed. Beerlando (2286), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 7, 2009 Pours dark mahogany in color with a small but lasting, creamy, dark khaki head. Some nice flares and spots of lacing mark the glass. Aromas are really nicely blended, notes of dark caramel and cola malt sweetness steeped well with vanilla and soft, sour mash bourbon notes. The smoke is subtle, imparting almost more of a charred oak note than smoked malts. Flavors follow suit, never too hot from the whiskey, with oaky, toasted vanilla notes, cocoa, and dark caramel working together nicely. Medium bodied, smooth, and softly carbonated, the mouthfeel works for a brew of this stature and type. Good stuff. WeeHeavySD (2942), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Feb 5, 2009 Bomber wax capped via trade with msante79, shared with dalekliz and my girlfriend Cyn who loves the smokey brews, and doesn’t mind whiskey too. Pours black with a 1 finger light brown head. Nose is quite smokey very rich, without a lot of bourbon or whiskey. Taste is smokey and a little light and vanilly with some oak and a touch of bourbon. I have mixed feelings about this, its certainly good, but slightly strange as well. Smoked beers are a mixed bag for me. I like the taste more than the nose, but its overall a nice smokey whiskey porta. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Jan 30, 2009 Bomber from Binny’s beverage depot in Orland Park, IL. It pours a dark, dark mahogany body with a creamy tan head. Not much lacing. The aroma is a smooth blending of burned oak, vanilla, Virginia smoked ham, dark caramel, and a touch of Bourbon. The flavor is almost there, but an off sourness is introduced - not too strong, but just enough to be a head scratcher. "What’s that doing there?" All in all, a very nice drink. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jan 28, 2009 22oz from the Wine and Cheese Place, online. I’ve enjoyed the regular smoked porter from O’Fallon quite a bit, and was eager to try this. Thick pour, one-finger cappuccino head. The aroma is very pungent, with tons of vanilla and oak but impresses by avoiding sharp, aggressive boozy notes. Nice. The body is actually somewhat thicker than I remember, a good thing. Slighty woody flavors emerge as the beer warms, along with an ever-so-off-putting tartness, with the smoke only moderately present. In some respects the barrel benefits the base beer, mostly in the nose and the depth. But at the same time, there’s an imperfect integration of the various elements and the main casualty is the smoke. Still, an enjoyable beer, albeit one that’s probably not worth the cost or the quest. travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Jan 26, 2009 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The aromas are malts, smokey, roasty, meaty, wood, and alcohol. The look is dark brown to black in color with a light beige colored head. Taste is oak, whiskey, malts, roasty, and alcohol. Hophead22 (1056), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA Jan 25, 2009 22oz bottle thanks to sry23 on BA. Same dark red pour as the regular version, nice head for a barrel agad beer. Same smokey aroma as well, but with a faint whiskey aroma in the back. Different taste though, the barrel is pretty pronounced and goes very well with the smokeyness. Pretty good, thanks Scott.
