Pours almost pitch black with a vague, reddish hue and an off-white head. Lightly smoked and roasted malt aroma. Medium body, lightly sweet, roasted malt with a weak smoke accent. Almost no bitterness. 070907 bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA

Aroma was lots of smoke and ash, some alcohol as well. Flavor was lots of the same, chocolate as well as some whiskey in there. Not a bad beer nothing amazing though.

The aroma picked up a whole lotta whiskey, and not a lot of smoke.. well-roasted dark chocolate malts behind it.. dry oaky notes present and a hint of vanilla come through in the end.. increasing sweetness and a nice whiskey aspect. The flavor had a dark chocolate core with mild coffee bitterness and again a very hefty whiskey presence.. sweet bourbon sugars, toasted oak, and vanilla.. sour oak and some bourbon bite at the finish.. the barrel-aging really took over. Rather lightly-bodied on the palate with too much barrel influence.. grainy and almost refreshing. Decent overall. MoDog (927), Griffith, Indiana, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 18, 2009 22oz wax-topped bomber. Served in an English pint glass. This beer poured a dark brown with some ruby highlights and a one-finger thick head that hung around for a while. Good lace. The aroma included an even blend of smoke, chocolate, coffee, and caramel. A faint note of whiskey. The flavor was full of molasses, vanilla, lingering smoke, caramelized sugar, plums, and sweet bourbon. Interesting flavor, but somewhat muddled. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had a moderate amount of soft carbonation. A decent beer, but the whiskey, while not overdone, doesn’t really add anything. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 18, 2009 Brown color with a small light tan head. I catch smoked vegetables in the aroma. Some sweet bourbon, ham and hints of dark berries as well. Somewhat complex, but a bit too odd. Flavors include caramel, cocoa, vanilla, tar, dark chocolate and black malt. Nothing gets to heavy in the flavor. Rather well balanced, still not much depth. A bit thin in feel. The whiskey flavors are there, the porter flavors are there; things just seem a bit disjointed. vyvvy (2069), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Sep 15, 2007 Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. The aroma has some roasted malt and LOTS of bourbon - very little if any smoke is noticeable. Medium / thin body with quite a bit of fizzy carbonation. The flavor starts off with a light taste and lots of soda-like effervescence. Then some thin roasted malt comes in and just the slightest bit of smoke. The finish has a mix of whiskey and white grape flavor. I guess overall it is okay, but it not for me at all. heemer77 (4313), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 16, 2009 Bomber. The body was perfectly black with a medium tan, yet thin head. The aroma was obviously smoky up front with mossy old wood. There was also a light touch of vanilla and peaches. The body was fairly flat and I felt that this detracted from the mouth feel. There was a strong taste of smoke, especially lingering in the aftertaste. Also, I got some woody notes with toffee and tobacco. I want to taste other flavors here, but the smoke dominates. There is a lingering licorice flavor, but it mostly comes through in the aftertaste. Decent, but I don’t get the hype. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jul 22, 2007 Thin light tan head, quickly and fully receding to a ring at the perimeter. The body is a deep, opaque, inky brown pour with plum hues. The smoke in the aroma is actually pushed forward by whiskey notes that alternate in waves between moderate and heavy. Chocolate is sweet and elegant, vanilla and anise are present and pleasant, in ample quantity. Wood notes seem wet and washed with bourbon. Vanilla and oak are far more exciting and engaging than I’d expected, married well and providing a stable backbone for the pungent whiskey. Campfire smoke and bacon are noted and seem stronger than they did in previous releases of this base beer. The flavor is easygoing, moderate smoke leading the way. Bitterness is light, sweetness is mild to moderate, whiskey and barrel flavors are strong but not overdone considering the length of time it spent in the bottle. the mouthfeel is very smooth, quite watery, lightly and softly carbonated. Finishes chocolatey with big smokey notes and gentle but full oak lingering. Better than expected, a very well done barrel aged beer. The time in the barrel proves too lengthy, however, thinning the palate to a degree that’s really just bland and stale feeling.
