Off the Rail Over the Mountain

Draft at Tugboat. Pours a deep, almost solid black; a little on the charcoaly side. This dark tan head. Huge wafting chocolate nose. Thick, creamy, almost sticky body--amazingly chocolatey and thick and sticky for 5.5%. Feels like the latest from Southern Tier. Chocolate, roast, some coffee, some black bready sweetness, and caramel whip around on the mid-palate. Mild herbal hop presence finishes things off. Nicely done. The brewer delivers kegs himself; his wife does the books. I love these little pico-breweries when they make great beer, out of all proportion even to how important the beer is. It’s just great to see the little guy doing it all.

Tap... Poured black with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate syrup and roasted malt. Palate is smooth and silky with a mild tingle. Chocolate flavors and hints of dairy dominate over the chalky malt flavors. Very drinkable and refreshing,

Draft. Blackish beer with a tan head. Big chocolate aroma with a bit of roast. Big chocolate flavor that lingers. Slight oatmeal influence - smooths but doesn’t overpower. Medium body. Some hops. Good beer.
